The inner bearing end of the cams are different diameters early/late style

... and most of the newer bikes don't have tolerances good enough so safely use gear drives.

Chain drive allows for more slop so why make expensive precision cranks. I have S&S gear drive cams on my early twincam and am fortunate to have very little run out. IMO considering the single crankpin design that the evo with its gear drive cams was the last great motor from Harley.

Randy @ Hyperformance can convert late style cams to work on the early engines.

We now have an economical way to turn your expensive cams from early to late or vice-versa by installing
these Torrington bearing races.

HMS 309 $114.00
HMS 310 Convert late to early

We used to perform that machine shop service, and even drop-ship them for Bob Wood.
Easy, peasy. :)

Modifying or changing the cam bearings won't  help much if the crankshaft  runout  is beyond the recommended  limits for installation of the gear drive setup.

The gear drive setup allows for more precise  timing and will eliminate the wear concerns that are inherent to the cam chain tensioners.
