Could be a defective battery, or it could be a defective charging system.  Both can be tested, and that's what I would recommend versus just guessing.  I seem to remember a bad batch of voltage regulators in 2012 btw.  Click on the attached file.

You've not mentioned what the voltage gauge is showing either while riding or with the engine off.  So no one can really have even a clue.  You've got a bad battery, bad/dirty/loose cable connections (somewhere), problem in the charging system or any of a potential few other issues.  All can be directly diagnosed.  Doing so is generally quicker and almost always less expensive than just guessing and throwing parts at it.

There was an issue with voltage regulators for your model year.  Do a search and find the product dates covered by the service recall.

Assuming the gauge is accurate (never a sure thing from HD) that is too high.  Check your charging system.  Check pieces independently as one failed piece can have taken out another.

Dood will Doodify these threads soon  ::) .

Your date of license nor even your date of manufacture are any guarantee as to the production date of the voltage regulator.  Don't speculate.  Look at the regulator to know its date of manufacture.  No other way to know.

The batteries are sealed.  No "changing of fluid" you could ever do.  Not to be insensitive here but it sounds like this is an issue that might be outside your range of experience a bit.  Might be best to have someone take a look at it for you as some of these failures, or some of the things you might do to test for them, can damage other pieces in the system.  You write that you've got the ESP.  No reason not to put it to use.

Yes, since you have the ESP it might be a good idea to have a shop look at it.  A decent shop will have the proper equipment to test the battery and the entire charging system, and if anything is wrong other than the battery the ESP will probably take care of it.  Batteries aren't normally covered.

There was a  recall on the regulators on the 12 CVO bikes.  I think it was bikes built between Oct and Feb.  I know my recall notice came in the mail five days after mine filled while on the road to MI, in the middle of IN farm land on a Sunday.

So I charge battery and it started up fine but I did notice at idle voltage was at 13volts and when I raised the rpms it went to 14v but then dropped back down to 13volts
