Replacing Starter
« on: June 05, 2015, 02:17:56 PM »

How hard of a job is it to replace the starter on my 2008 FLHTCUSE3? Mine is starting to act up after 44,000 miles. I have a new starter to install but was looking for a video on removal and installation. Any help appreciated.

Very very easy.  Unhook the battery negative with the switch set appropriately so the alarm doesn't bite you in the ass.  Remove the wiring from the starter.  Take the bolts out of the starter.  Pull the starter from the bike.

Same procedure for a 2005 SEEG?  I was under the impression the primary cover had to come off.

Prior to the 2007 models, you had to remove the outer primary cover.  When H-D changed the primary system for 2007, they went to a starter that just bolts up from the outside, like a car.

McDonald Road Captain, what seems to be the problem with your starter?  The actual electric motor rarely fails, and if it's OK you can replace the drive and clutch separately for about one quarter of the cost of a complete new starter assembly.

My son just replaced the failing starter on his 2008 CVO Roadking with only 22,000 miles. I had heard so many horror stories about starters on CVO's. We trip a lot and I did not want to have a problem on the road with 44,000 miles. I have gone through three compensaters so I know starter has taking a beating in the past. New complete starter came from unused Visa Chrome Cash so I feel that it is free. Trying to stay ahead of the game.

Entirely different on the later bikes.  What was an all evening chore eating up fluids and expensive gaskets on bikes like ours became a 10 minute removal on the later models.

Arguably about the only thing the MOCO got right on the 07 models was this change....   ???

Sounds easy enough. Thanks for info.

I know on my 2012 Ultra it comes out very easy. Only one hour to take out and replace starter clutch and install.

Thanks. Was wondering about clearances when removing and replacing more than anything.

Got the job completed this morning. A few clearance problems with my Kuryakyn true dual rear header pipe but worked it out. Also had to remove speedometer sensor to get room.  I found that the rear spacer between the starter and inner primary was missing so I had to make a trip to Harley to get one. No I did not drop it, it wasn't there. Must have been left out in production since starter has never been removed. Who knows? Could have been a Friday. Anyway thanks for advice.
