Saddle Bag Skid Plate Fell Off!!
« on: June 09, 2015, 11:14:43 AM »

I was with a friend that had a 2012 SG and dropped it/set it down on it's left side.

Did not damage the saddlebag.  But 50 miles later we were driving down the interstate and his skid plate came flying off.

This plate is held on by adhesive and I think the drop pinched it loose.

So if you set your bike down....be sure to double check the skid plate.

I did the same thing on a previous bike. Didn't have the kickstand locked 100% and I wasn't able to hold it up. Lowered it slowly. The skid plate came lose, but it saved the paint. I took the plate off for safety until I got back home. Didn't want it to come flying off while riding.

I guess that this skid plates are something that needs to be routinely checked.

Has anyone ever actually scrap these skid plates while riding?

I think they may have been designed for exactly as described above.  I scraped the hell out of the floorboards on my 10 SESG but I don't believe I ever scratched those corner protectors.

And, I don't believe they'd protect much since they'd pop right off if you were going at speed.

Did the bike have saddlebag guards?

I lost one and gouged one on my SERG, they are $30+ each best I remember. After loosing the one, I tapped the bag where it went on and then cleaned it with prep-sol then used 3M adhesion promoter on the area then installed the piece, never lost another one.

My right side came off the same way. Didn't notice it until I cleaned the bike.

Wait until you price them! Needless to say, I'm still missing one.

$30 is cheap compared to painting a saddle bag if you sit it down more than once.  :2vrolijk_21:

The fact that $30 is cheaper than paint was why I put them back on, just made sure I put them back as secure as I possibly could.
The 3M adhesion promoter with there moulding adhesive tape is almost like a weld, if you clean surface appropriately first.

:2vrolijk_21:     It's all about the surface prep and the process, just like with any other adhesive mounted nameplate, molding, whatever.  I imagine the reason they are falling off is the same reason Harley has had complaints about nameplates falling off:  Poor Process Control.

I think MSRP is around $19.30 each these days, with the discount dealers selling them for $15 and change.  Oh, and they don't call them skid plates, they are "wear strips".  I guess that means they expect them to wear off. ;)

About a year ago I was backing out of my garage and just stupidly dropped my bike (not really sure why..). When I got it back up (needed help which is sad) I couldn't see any damage anywhere which I was very relieved by. Went for a ride with my kid riding his Honda CBR and when we stopped for the first time he told me I almost "beheaded him". Turns out that at about 50mph, the skid pad flew off and barely missed him. When  I went to get a replacement they didn't have any 3M tape so I just epoxied it on. Not sure that was a good idea but has stayed on since though i haven't dropped my bike since (on that side at least..).
