I use both the CVO Indoor cover (08 only had indoor dust cover) when the bike used to live in the same area as my woodshop, and an outdoor Exigent cover when in places like at the Chip in Sturgis when between the drunks drag racing an Leroy on his tractor the dust and dew would've formed a baked on mud pie every night. Washed it down first, but not to the point that I was spending more then 15 minutes or so. Just enough to make sure I wasn't scratching it up. Most trips it can sit out and get wet and I'll giver the 15 minute wipe down in the AM to get the dew and softened bugs off. Bugslide detail spray makes the whole process easier, but I've used everything from Amsoil Miracle Wash to Harley and Mothers quick detail spray. All of them leave a bit of wax that makes a wet bike safe to wipe down with a bit of common sense and a microfiber.
I have never once washed my bike with soap on a trip. Soap strips wax. And I'll be danged if I'm going to take the time to wax a bike on vacation.
I do use an Exigent Solar seat cover almost everyday in the summer months. It's not waterproof but it does really keep most of the water off. Mostly though it just keeps the heat from wearing the leather out pre maturely. And it's 20 degrees cooler or so when I sit my but on it. Maybe more. Final advantage is that when the tour-pack is full the helmet can sit under the solar cover. Actually one on the back seat and one over the back rest and its not really visible as a temptation to thieves. Not secure at all, but why did under my cover when there's other helmets sticking out hanging on bars. My cover goes over the Tour-Pak back rest down to the front of the seat and Velcro's to the grab handles I have. Prior to those handles it attached to the saddlebag guard rails but handles work better.
