What a privilege!  I got to inspect them first HAND! To be such an advanced life form, they seemed under developed.

Kinda of small, but then again so a “they”.

It should be noted that this property also has a campground.  Folks come from around the USA to stay here and perhaps share in the “experience”.  However I must tell you, there is a funky smell that duplicates a certain legal substance here in Colorado near the campground.

After leaving Hopper, I would be riding the back roads towards Canon City for a visit to Royal Gorge.  However along the way some really bad weather was heading towards me.  Strong winds, up to 30mph gust, small hail, and rain was in my path.  Royal Gorge became a bust as the storm was here and it was time to become a storm chaser.  Perhaps in this case, a storm racer, as in away from it.

That led me towards Cripple Creek, a location as you may recall that started my relationship with JCZ, ak and Jonga.  A lot of memories were made here and they came back as I arrived in town BUT so did the storm!  A quick ride through and I needed to giddy-up!

It became a race to Manitou Springs so I could out run this weather and in the end I mostly did.

Day Six | Manitou Springs, CO – Aspen, CO – Ashcroft, CO – Manitou Springs, CO | 400 miles

Today’s journey would be a high-rise experience with a crossing at Independence Pass.  This pass is only open during the summer and reaches an elevation of over 12,000 feet.  In addition this lies on the Continental Divide in which Colorado offers many opportunities.  The pass is midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes and located on Highway 82.

Perhaps now you understand why this road is only open a few months out of the year!

Hey look at me!  I’m a Snowman!

Eventually I would end up in Aspen, CO and enjoy an outside dinning experience.  Yes I said it, an outdoor dinning experience.  I was quite surprised given the location I was in.  Not only did this property have outdoor dinning but inside too.

The restaurants were open for business inside and out, unlike Pueblo, CO which I visited earlier.  In Pueblo, drive-in only and if you are on a bike, forget about it.

Remember – Hey Nineteen?

After a brief visit to Aspen, it was time to head down the trail to Ashcroft, CO.

In the spring of 1880, prospectors Charles B. Culver and W. F. Coxhead left the boomtown of Leadville to search for silver deposits in the Castle Creek Valley. After vigorously promoting their findings back in Leadville, Coxhead returned to find 23 more prospectors had joined “Crazy Culver” in the camp they named Castle Forks City. They formed a Miner’s Protective Association, built a court house, and laid out the streets in only two weeks. Each of the Association’s 97 members paid $5—or one day’s work and $1—to draw for building lots.
