How important is the 15K checkup?
« on: June 16, 2015, 09:24:44 PM »

I am coming up on 15K miles and a little low on cash. Do most of you guys keep current on all the recommended dealer services (basically every 5000 miles) or do you just change the oil and ride?

If you look in your owner's manual you will see that most of the recommended service is just "inspect".....
other than oil changes.
My bikes go up on the rack while I'm changing fluids that gives me a chance to "inspect" everything else.

What exactly does the checklist for the 15k service include?  I can't remember anything terribly important other than fluid changes anyway.  Btw, if you don't know what's on the checklist, it should be in your manual or you can get it on the H-D website.    https://www.harley-davidson.com/content/h-d/en_US/home/owners/maintain-your-bike/maintenance-schedules.html

Most of the 5K services (5, 15, 25, etc) are fluid change with the "major" being on the 10's (10, 20, 30, etc) so the 15K service is mainly a engine oil.  However, at each service it's a great idea (and I'm sure you do this) to look over/feel/inspect the bike for anything out of the ordinary.  There are some time frame service intervals that don't coincide with the 5K normal intervals.  Clutch/brake fluid come to mind as changing every 2 years.

I just take the owners manual and do what it says, myself. I have NEVER had a bike or car in a dealer for a mileage related service so probably not the person to ask. But I also have never had a failure or problem due to doing it myself. But I actually do what is on the list when you are supposed to the best of my ability.

I normally do all my own maintenance, but occasionally take it in for dealer service so someone else can look over the bike. Better to have a second set of eyes to catch things I may have missed or just got used to. If I had the 10K done at a dealer, I'd do the 15K myself.
