Inferior speakers in headsets
« on: January 14, 2007, 11:45:05 PM »

It's a shame we spend the big bucks on a CVO and the motor company drops the ball and we have a battle on our hands.  I've been in and out of the shop because of distortion in the headsets while using the CB, XM and FM.  They changed headsets numerous times, CB module, etc.  Now they tell me that Tech Services has informed them that the speakers in the Harley headset are 1 ohm speakers and because the SE has an amp booster, the speakers can't handle the power, the speaker needs to be 2ohms or more. My question to them is  "Why don't they change the speakers"??  My service writer scratched his head and said "I don't know".  He said they suggested that I put the volume at 3/4 and keep the bass low.  I just looked at him and asked if heard what he just said.

I don't know about you, but I didn't spend 32k to have to use the volume at 3/4 output especially while cruising at 75 mph.  If there are others out there having the same problem, we need to band together and have HD get off there butts and correct the problem.

Let me hear from you, Framemaker

Framemaker, the solution here is to bend over and remove your wallet.

Read this thread which will offer the info for J & M headsets.  Like many MoCo designs, the headset is also made to be replaced by the owners.  Like it or not.

I had the J & M 174 before trying the HD headset.  This too distorted when using the CB.  According to Tech Services, Theirs is not 2 ohms either. Are you using the J & M?
Opening my wallet isn't the problem.  I've done that more than I can count. This issue is that they know there is a weakness and won't fix it.  Why put a booster on the bike if they don't give you the tools to use it?
You pay a huge premium for an SE, so you have already opened your wallet far wider than most others, why should we have to keep paying and paying?? It's not right, car companies have to stand behind their products.

Just my opinion,

I never used the headset from my old Ultra, so I never knew about the speaker issue until I finally decided to use it with my SEUC.  The speakers do distort, and since they do that..........and I'm too cheap to spend money on one of those J&M things, I simply use it for voice comms only.  I put the speaker switch in the center position, blast the music through the external speakers, and voice comms through the headset at a reasonable volume.  It is a compromise, but it works.  For the most part, I don't ride with my 3/4 helmet anyway since I prefer a half helmet.  For the time being, this works for me.  One of these days I'll break down and buy two GOOD high quality headsets..........one of these days.  Renea and I are quite comfortable with the way things are right now though.

I hear you loud and clear.  It isn't just your opinion, most here agree, it is wrong. However, the MoCo has us all trained into trading out, up or replacing the crap they don't do right.

I guess I don't notice the problem much since I seldom have the radio cranked through the headset.  I found that I didn't have the ear pieces directly over my ears and when I got them centered I didn't need the volume as much.

Still, this doesn't address the real issue of the 1 ohm speakers.  I don't have the J & M now, but many here have recommended them.  Again the 1 ohm issue isn't resolved.

Our HOG club is extremely active.  We usually have 50+ bikes on our rides and 8 to 10 bikes in a group.  The CB is an important part of keeping the group together and avoiding trarffic problems.  Voice is more important to me than the music.  When I can't get the volume at highway speeds, it jeopardizes the safety of our group if I'm leading, and I can't coordinate with a lead captain if I'm tailgunner.  At high volume the voice distorts and I can't understand the words.  The J & M was so high pitched that it didn't come in clear either, I even upgraded the speakers, and their customer service people were no help.

Oh well,  another problem on the long list.

Thanks, All
