Raingear Ugh...
« on: June 29, 2015, 09:04:22 AM »

Never buying true raingear before, I decided that with our Harley Bucks this time around we should invest in some.  Sturgis is coming up and we would like to be better prepared.

So off to the Harley store, remember Harley Bucks...

We pick out matching Harley suits with bright orange reflective and pants with suspenders.  Got the Gators as well.

The wife really doesn't care for my orange and black color on our SERG, so orange raingear seemed to be appropriate to me...  I told her it was not a fashion statement, but a MUST BE SEEN IN THE RAIN statement.

So here we are all prepared for rain.

It started out nice Saturday, but after buying the raingear and putting it all in the saddle bags, we start to feel a few rain drops.  Darn, the rain was supposed to stay away for the rest of the day.  So we ride home, about 7 miles and we get a "little" wet.

So Sunday the weather was supposed to be great until late in the day and then all hell was supposed to break loose.  Well all hell did break loose later, we had three tornados touch down within about 10 miles of our house, one less than 5 miles away.

But back to the Sunday ride.  All of the raingear and our cheap Frogg Toggs were still at the house.  We get to our BBQ destination and while parking we feel a few drops of rain.  After we eat it looks like it had blown over, but not quite.

We hit the freeway and book on home, getting wet for the second time after just buying new raingear....  :(  :(  :(  I think we actually ran into the weather cell as we were riding much faster east than the cell was moving.  If we had waited we might have been better, but there was another larger cell moving in from the west and we took our chances.

I know, we were NOT prepared and it's our fault, but it seems just a bit ironic that we just bought over $500 in raingear and we get wet not once, but twice in two days.

We hope to be better prepared when we leave for Sturgis this year.   :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21:

Dan:

Like you many years ago I invested in a nice rain set up including Totes boots. I carry everything with me in one of my hard bags....just in case. But it seems I am always riding with some buds who are packing their significant others when the rain comes. So, I am put in the position of having to give up my stuff to protect somebodys sweet thing from rain water.

So, I have never worn my bib overalls, jacket or boots and get wet with the rest of the guys while sweety pie sits all nice and dry.

Oh well.....

You are either to nice or a lying bastard. ;D

Those types will never learn until they suffer the consequences of being unprepared. I did have to give up my chaps on a return day of an 8 day ride when it got very cold. I gave them to the wife because she actually got dangerously hypothermic. Bull to the chit about the other dude and his wife. My gear is always in the saddlebag.

Yeh I'd just hate to see some young hottie get all wet and all. :P

I just gave away our rain gear, we'd had it for almost 15 years and worn it successfully maybe twice.
Just rode 3 days to Texas, rode through some healthy downpours without suits and either didn't get that wet, or dried quickly.
Typically I'm smart enough to stay home, and if we get caught out in really bad stuff we just wait it out somewhere.

I've been called both over time. 😃

Its the same type that want to know when we are going to stop before we've started the ride. 😃

I try and ride with only guys for that reason now days. I'm a big fan of "Show up on time with all bathroom breaks done, gassed up and ready to go"  if you're late you know which direction we are going in and you can catch up.

Our rain gear is always in the saddlebags an it gets used often enough for us to say it was worth every penny it cost. So far this season I've use mine 3 times. Wore it for two days during my return from Ribfest and again during the ride home from Laconia bike week. The wife only had to use hers during the ride home from Laconia since she FLEW home from Nashville after Ribfest.... A typical season will see it worn about a half dozen times. A quality set of rain gear is  must if you're going to do any traveling by bike 'cause you will get caught in wet weather.

As for lending it out....not likely since if it's needs to be worn I and the wife will be wearing it. When we bought new stuff I did give our old rain gear to a friend who had none and was heading out on his first long distance trip just to save him a few bucks.

I bought a new rain suit a few years ago after riding to the Outer Banks Bike Week waring my Harley rain suit. When I arrived there I was soaked from the neck down. Major leakage! of I bought a rain suit from the Exigent bike cover guy. He swore that I would love the suit. It is Pro Riders raingear, made in Pakistan. I know, I was leery but he guaranteed I would like it or he would send me my money back. He did give me his phone # and off I went. Well it was over a year later when I got caught in a major storm and suited up including the Exigent gators he gave me. Stayed bone dry and was happy, happy, happy! Needless to say I kept the rain suit. Now I don't leave home without it and do stop to put it on. The last time I wore it was on the way to Ribfest.
Oh yeah it is black with orange and silver reflective stripes.
And they only keep you dry if you put them on.

I ride with a select few. Most of the people we used to ride with culled us out. We ride to far in a day and don't drink beer on rides. I am with you about being late and not being able to ride for a few miles. I say come prepared or pay your price. Hey I think I would like to ride with you Jerry and if i don't have enough money you could give me some.  :P

I've gone through no name brands, frog togs, a Fullmer rain suit and have only ever had luck with the Harley suit.   >:(

I find a lot of the gear I've bought over the years ends up getting replaced with Harley gear.  >:(

I really hate that because Harley costs so dang much.  But if I get gift cards, and the aftermarket stuff I bought isn't working, or it needs to be replaced and there's no rally's coming up I might as well get the good stuff.  I have 10 year old FXRG gear that is still my goto cold weather gear and as I mentioned HD rain gear which works great with one exception.  Sometimes the front of my rain jacket bunches a little making a cup that water collects in and then it works under the flap and through the zipper.  It's the only time it leaks.

I ride with a "ride through it" HOG crowd.  After freezing my soaked but off I've told them to Eff Off and I stop and put my gear on before the rain hits.  I really don't care who stops with me.  Our actual riding friends all stop together and lately, I prefer to avoid HOG rides for more than just rain reasons.

I never leave home without it and never loan it out.  Girls look good wet and cold.  And they learn from their mistakes.  ;D

Nothing like some "shirt berries" to make the day even better.   ;)

Wondering if there's a common denominator, so:  What do you see with HOG rides?

If you actually want good gear instead of the HD gear everyone gets at the HD Boutique. Try Klim, aerostich, BMW or someone that actually make real riding gear compared to "poser gear". (I have plenty of poser gear from HD but would never use it for serious riding) looks good around the block though

FWIW: I think HD has a business deal with Northface for all of their newer weather gear.

If that gear isn't up to par, you can always use your "issued" gear. It's tried and true.

Good gear but not at 65 mph. Blows apart. (Love North Face by the way)
