Electrical Gremlin
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:00:22 AM »

So I went away for the weekend to Wales and experienced some electrical issues on my 2014 SERK. It was raining when I set off on the Saturday and it was cold enough to put my heated grips on. The first thing I noticed after about 30 minutes of riding was that the heated grips had gone off. I also noticed that the Electrical System Lamp had lit up on the speedo (see attached picture which shows the lamp). We then stopped for fuel and when we set off everything was ok again but after about 10 minutes it happened again. Every time we stopped for either fuel or a coffee/lunch stop the fault disappeared only to reappear between 10 and 30 minutes of riding. It even happened if I didn't use the heated grips at all. It then became clear after talking to people behind me that when the fault occurred my rear lights also went out. My headlamp, brake lights and turn signals were unaffected by the fault.

On Sunday the same thing happened up until lunchtime and then the fault disappeared altogether. I have not been out on her since.

My bike is a European model so did not come with an LED headlamp. During the winter I fitted an LED headlamp and also installed Heat Demons heated grips. I wired the grips to the now redundant Position Lamp connector block. I notice from checking the wiring diagram that this position lamp appears to have the same blue live feed that the rear lights have (J3 in the BCM)? I have done nearly 1000 miles since I fitted the headlamp and heated grips with no issues until now. Any ideas anyone?

Bav, not sure if its the same thing, but I was away a few weeks ago and my Sat Nav and Heated Gloves stopped working. Sat Nav just went off, after about 30 mins all came back on. Spoke to a few folks and they suggested it maybe something to do with the Canbus, apparently if it senses add ons are taking too much current, it stops the current to those bits of kit. I have mine wired through the ancillary plug harness. Haven't had it since, but stopped switching my Sat Nav on without the engine on, it used to come on as soon as it was put into the craddle

The first thing I would suggest is to read the diagnostic trouble codes.  Something like this should have set a code.  While the obvious place to look is your heated grip installation, it would be better to check the codes first before you make any assumptions that could lead you in the wrong direction.

Since your bike does use the HD-LAN (CAN bus) system, your grips really should have been wired using the special harness Harley recommends and not through the position light circuit.  Using that circuit could in fact cause the BCM to assume a fault and shut down the circuit to protect it.  It works like a smart circuit breaker in that it can turn a circuit on or off automatically without your intervention.

From the instructions for the H-D accessory grips:
--------------------
For 2014-Later Models
NOTE
Unless  already  installed,  an  Electrical  Connection  Harness (Part No. 69200722, available separately) must be installed per the instructions in that kit.
1. Follow instructions in the Electrical Connection Harness Kit to:
  a. Splice the orange/white wire in the hand grip kit to the  red/yellow  wire  on  the  Electrical  Connection Harness.
  b. Splice the red wire in the hand grip kit to the red/blue wire on the Electrical Connection Harness.
  c. Splice the black wire in the hand grip kit to the black wire on the Electrical Connection Harness.

--------------------

I'm attaching a pdf of the instruction sheet for the electrical connection harness.

Thanks Jerry. Very useful info. I've disconnected the grips for now as its really hot here and I won't be using them for a few months hopefully.

I did use the harness for my satnav and the heated gloves, and the Canbus did shut them down, so it does work  :)

When I connected my FP3 I could see that 2 DTCs had been recorded

B2168 Running lights output shorted low

B2169 Running lights output over-loaded

These point to the fact that I wired the heated grips to the running lights circuit and they have overloaded it. I'm a bit worried about the shorted low message though?

I assume the shorted high message is due to the increased current draw from the grips on that circuit, making the BCM think there may be a short circuit.  If you wire the grips per the recommended method, clear these codes, and then operate the bike and the grips I'll bet your problem and your codes will be gone.

always think twice before connecting accessories to a canbus equipped vehicle. It can blow your system computers.
Have seen it before. You really should have enough knowledge of the system.

All sorted now. Rewired the heated grips into the accessory switch on the nacelle. They have worked fine now for the last 6 weeks.
