Looking to add a little "umph" to my 2013 RK
« on: July 05, 2015, 07:58:31 PM »

I've already done a search and wrote down some good info on this topic. I figured it would be good to post here too since you all own the same (or very close) model. I have absolutely no background or knowledge of vehicles so I appreciate your patience.

First off, I'm not dissatisfied with the performance of my bike. I just want to add a few tasteful upgrades for a little bit more power. Longevity and running healthy are important to me so I want to do things right. I have Vance and Hine High Output exhausts and will be adding the Power Duals and Fuel pak very soon. I figured these items along with possibly new cams should do.

After some research, I discovered my bike came stock with the 255 cams. What would be the "step up" from these cams and would any additional modifications be needed to safely run the cam? Any other items you'd recommend that wouldn't require a major overhaul of the bike?

Thank you!

Forget the Fuepak, get a proper tuner such as a TTS,Power Vision or T Max and have a proper tune done by a pro.
I'd swap out the 255 cams for a GMR Genesis 577 or an S&S MR103 cam, both deliver more power everywhere and are much easier on the valvetrain. My buddy installed the MR103 in his '12 Classic, makes 98hp/112t, pulls thru 5500rpm, has more torque than the 255 down at 2000rpm, better mileage too!

Most definitely, forget the Fuel Pak and go with a real tune.  There are lots of used Fuel Paks for sale on the internet, for a very good reason.  Apply the money to a real tune using a full featured system.  There is a lot of info on the TTS, Power Vision, SEPST, and similar flash tuning systems on the site, but I like to recommend that you first find a full time professional tuner with excellent credentials to do the tuning, then ask him for his recommendation on which device and system to use.  It's a tool, and the guy using the tool would be the logical choice to help decide which tool to use.

As for the cam and other engine mods, you will need to define what your goals are to get the best answers.  Just adding a little "umph" doesn't tell us much.  Are you looking for better midrange and top end, better low end pulling power, how do you normally ride (one up and kind of sporty, two up, two up and loaded to the gills), etc.

Thank you all for the info so far. I will definitely look into one of the tuners you recommended and not buy the fuel pak. I've also found great reviews on that 577 cam.

As far as what I'm looking for, I am 1-up 99% of the time and like to dig in quite a bit on the curvy roads. I don't ride like a mad man, but tend to be more aggressive than my other friends who have cruisers. On the highway I would prefer the power to be on the low end where I can just twist the throttle for instant power rather than having to downshift.

I hope that helps, thanks again!

Don't know anything about 25D cams, but "Ridgerunr" has it right re: the 24D cams. It's a combo that CAN'T be beat as far as an inexpensive combo. I do a lot of them, and the power, and torque are as listed. Engine runs a lot cooler as well.  ;)

I added GMR's 577 cams and a TTS tuner to my 110 Streetglide about 10,000 miles ago. Reinhart 4" mufflers and V&H Dresser Duals. I also changed the lifters to S&S lifters.

Was just looking for a tad more power. Same set up before cams 86HP/108TQ. After 98HP/114TQ.. Runs just a bit stronger.

If I added a bit of compression better. Head work better stil but I'm happy for now.

Please mention whether you have the ESP and how many miles are on your ride. In factory warranty or possibly the ESP may constrain your cam selection and other bits.
Are you willing to bump compression (more involved) or wanting to stay "bolt-on"?

Definitely worth giving Steve at GMR a ring....

If you really want a thrilling umph, put a bolt on Trask Turbo charger on your bike.  Adds 50 hp/tq without digging into engine. Expect to get 145/160 hp/tq on my 110" with the turbo.

Sorry, can you clarify "ESP"? I would prefer the mods to be bolt on.
