Sirius XM Reception Issue 2015 FLTRUSE
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:17:15 PM »

Sirius XM reception on our 2015 SERGU has been very poor from the time we activated it, often indicating lost signal and constantly dropping out completely.  It has been unusable. Talking with the service writer at the dealership was less than inspiring for the issue being fixed. So with both the 2015 service manuals in hand, I decided to have a look for myself as I've always done all my own servicing anyway. I found the antenna mounted on the UNDERSIDE of the steel Infortainment system support bracket! It was pointing towards the ground and had a substantial amount of steel shielding it from the sky! Simple fix to move it to the proper location on the mounting plate on top of the left speaker enclosure. Signal strength has changed from one bar-no bar, to all 3 bars even in the garage. I could only get a 5 minute test ride in due to weather issues but it is much better already! I will post again after a longer test ride. This photo is how the antenna was found upon removing the windshield and vent assembly.

Where the antenna is supposed to be.

Looks like some more "close enough for government work" craftsmanship from the MoCo.  Glad you found it, and I'm wondering how many more they built that way.

If you still find you're having less than great reception even with the antenna located where it belonged in the first place, the next step would be to move it outside of the fairing entirely.  As we kicked around in another XM reception thread recently, the auto folks mount theirs on the roof instead of buried in the dash for a very good reason.

I likely have the same issue on my 3 month old RGU as I lose signal every time I go under a tree branch overhanging the road.  Have not been into the fairing to check as I dont use the XM much and not sure I'll even renew the service.

grc, I've been reading up on the XM reception issues. That's one of the reasons I'm not calling if fixed yet. Pouring rain here in SW Colorado right now and I've got to get back to work, so I won't get any testing time in for a few days. I was planning on an external mounting site when I started and that's why I took the entire fairing off. After a little thought on the situation I decided to give the designed location a try first. To check out the antenna mount you only need to remove the 4 windshield screws and pop the vent assembly loose. It looks as if an external mount will be easy to do. I'll report back once I get some ride time in.

Mine is in stock location and works great, even in the garage if door is open. Also works in Hard Rock Casino parking structure until you go into the middle row. Very good reception. I only use XM so I am satisfied

Finally got some ride time in after moving the Sirius XM antenna to the location shown in the Harley service manual. Rode south from Montrose to Ouray and even in the mountains the reception was spot on. It never dropped the signal even once and I have confidence that the reception issue is resolved! Now my thoughts are why was the Sirius XM antenna placed in the wrong location to begin with? The bikes are usually shipped windshield not installed and other pre-delivery procedures needing to be completed by the dealer. Is the upper vent assembly one of these items and the antenna placed where it was for protection when in transit? If that's the case then it was overlooked during pre-delivery. If the vent is installed at the time of assembly, then it's being overlooked by Harley. Either way I'm relieved it's now working! Wish I had looked at it before our trip to LaJolla CA. last month.

I installed the 1.19.1 software update this weekend, XM reception I believe was listed as one of the fixes. Mine does seem to be better and less likely to drop signal under trees.  I do know that the antennae is in the correct stock location.
