I'm not sure where to start.  Is there a kit I need to buy? I can see a big wiring harness or maybe an amp under the box.  Has anyone done this and do you have any pointers for me?  I appreciate any comments.

Hey Man,

You will have to buy a kit.  Lots of discussion on this Forum about folks that have relocated their tour pack.  I used the Kuryakin kit that made mine adjustable from -1" to +3"(back).  J&P Cycles has a nice video on how to install it.  Folks also have been very successful with the George Anderson TP relocator kit.  Just make sure you buy one that fits your bike!  Good luck!

Duh...   Just read your question again....  I've read some posts about folks making their TP detachable, but it requires moving the amp up under the fairing and getting a kit to make it happen.  Hopefully you can find some of those posts via the search engine on the site, and maybe someone with direct experience will chime in ...

The link above is excellent and was helpful when I did this recently. I detailed the steps I took with part numbers were applicable:

Not sure how our bikes differ ssls6, but I'd be happy to help out if I can.

I did everything as Kiro but I put my amp in my right saddle bag. The wire can be rerouted and plugged right back in. I also made quick disconnects for all my harnesses to the tour pack. I didn't like the reception I was getting form the hidden antenna so I used a mount that is like the one on the tour pack and mounted it at the bottom of the spacer plate between the rear fender and saddle bag. I use a shorty and it runs along the filler plate and stops right at the same height as when I use a small luggage rack with my 4 point docking setup.
I can send pictures if you like.
You will read people say the amp gets too hot in the saddle bag. I have been running mine like this for 2 years and I live in HOT ASS Georgia. It has been fine. I have close to 20,000 miles on the bike and 15,000 has been with this setup.
