stalling
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:20:28 PM »

When I bought my bike brand new it stalled a few times when cold. I had it dyno tuned with a new exhaust and it's better, but still will stall or give a little spit out the intake once in a while. Only happens when idling or just above idle. Any thoughts?

Many many things it might be.  It's simply a troubleshooting exercise that crosses the spectrum from mapping issues at one to a vacuum leaks at the other and everything in between.  However....

If it was having the problem new out of the crate I'd not have changed a thing until the initial problem was fixed.  Changing the things you did gives the dealer all the latitude in the world to say it's no longer a warranty problem and could be related to your changes.  I know we get anxious wanting to "improve" the factory delivered bikes (especially as they so often need it or can benefit from it).  But it's a potential hazard to take things more than one step at a time.

Yeah, I hear you. Since the dealer did the pipe and tune I'm hoping it either gets covered or they stand by the work they did, and treat me fairly in terms of labor. I know I'm probably going to pay something. I'm just wondering what I should make sure they look at, and if there is anything I should try before taking it in. I know since it is a sporadic thing, I'm going to get the old, "it ran fine for us."

Since your dealer did the "tune", then they most definitely should fix this problem for you.  It shouldn't have done this even stock, but since they sold you a SEPST and tune, now they own the problem.  BTW, the reason I said quote tune unquote is that many dealers don't really do a full tune in these situations.  What many do is sell you the SEPST, then load one of the Harley canned maps that's close and make a couple runs on the dyno to create a chart.  A REAL tune includes all operating ranges, from idle to redline, under varying loads, and it takes more than just a couple hours to accomplish.

I'd be shocked if they did anything more than what you described. Still, aside from that occasional stall when cold, it does run good, and powerful, too.

Thanks Fred. That was my hope, but mine has still done it a few times. Usually it happens if I'm letting it warm up. If I just get on and ride gently to warm it up, I'm good. Still, it shouldn't be that way. And like you said, in the right circumstances, you could drop it.

I found two other people on here who reported this issue. One said his pipe and tune cured it, and another said new spark plugs did the job. Neither of those eliminated the problem for me.

Have you talked to the "experts" at the dealership about this yet?  Ultimately either they will have to step up and fix it, or you will have to find a real qualified tuner to do it.  If they can't fix it, demand your money back and go elsewhere.  As I noted previously, by modifying the bike you gave H-D a free pass to just blow you off.  But the dealership that performed that illegal emission system tampering still owes you a proper tune.

I'm going to speak to them first. I'd like to get Ken at Black Hills to do a real tune, but since the bike was worse when stock, I think there is another problem.

Puma, I have an 08 sg ( first yr of the electronic throttle) & had svere throttle response issues (along with 4 other 08 bike owners from my dealership). tried several different tuners, but nothing worked. even had factory rep down. by the way, I dropped the new sg while doing a demonstration for a riding class with 3 other MSF instructors watching. all due to having no throttle response, so no power to rear wheel.(hd had to repaint fairing & other parts due to it being their problem & witnesses to that). factory rep said "she" had never heard of someone using a "touring" bike to teach a riding class, lmao. Anyway, have them check the throttle response sensor
