Low Fuel Light problems
« on: July 14, 2015, 09:15:04 AM »

I have a 2007 SERK and a while back my low fuel light stopped working.  If perform a diagnostic, the light comes on, so the light isnt blown, but I have actually run it out of gas to see if the light will come on.  It worked when I first got it, but not anymore.  And no I havent been inside the Speedo yet.  Ideas?

The stupid light comes on whenever it wants to on mine so I don't even pay attention to it. Sometimes it comes on about the right time and others comes on just a hair under 1/4 tank. :nixweiss: Maybe MOCO saved the stockholders a few pennies and used a cheap Chinese sending unit.

The four Harleys I've had all had questionable fuel gauges and low fuel lights.  I still use mileage to gauge my distance to empty.

Had the same issue on my 2014 CVO RK when the dealer raised the tank for a recall something came unplugged. After plugging the wire(s) in it had to in essence relearn itself. Canbus deal IIRC, and not sure your model year is the same.

Sounds like an issue with the sending unit inside the tank,  not anything inside the speedo or something with the light itself.   Check there,  and do some resistance checks.   See if it is in spec. :2vrolijk_21:

Does the actual fuel gauge work properly?  If it does, and it goes down to empty as the tank actually becomes empty, then odds are it isn't the sending unit.  The sending unit is just a simple variable resistor with a two wire connection, and the same resistance is seen by the actual fuel gauge and the speedo for the light.  There isn't a separate sensor just for the light.  If the gauge works properly, the light illuminates during a self test, but the light doesn't work when the gauge reading drops to nearly empty, I would do some checking of the circuit and connections at the speedometer.

Usually the low fuel lights are supposed to come on with about one gallon remaining in the tank, which would be about 3/16 on the fuel gauge.

Yes the gauge works just fine...I have some things to do to the bike tonight, so I will lift the tank and make sure everything is plugged in...
Thanks

Amen to the guys who watch their fuel range/trip meter.  The trip meter won't let you down if you can remember to set it.  Then compare it to your fuel range meter.  I can fill up my tank when the gage is just into the red, and find that I still had well over a gallon in the tank.  That gage is almost as useless as the old air temp gage on my '07 EG was!!!   :o

Harley has never been famous for good, or even passable, fuel gauge accuracy.  However, if the gauge gives consistent and repeatable results, and the only problem is the accuracy, it's not hard to make it work well enough that you won't need to worry about resetting your trip meter at every gas stop.  The other problem with the trip meter method, besides forgetting to reset it, is that it doesn't automatically compensate for varying riding conditions or fuel differences that could change the MPG enough to throw off your approximation of fuel range.  If someone wants to stretch fuel to minimize stops, the trip meter method can easily cause one of those "aw chit" moments, if you know what I mean.  If you always stop for gas when you've only used about half a tank, then no big deal.

Greetings,

You might check your manual.  Mine stopped working after it's worked since new (2009).  It was just annoying to me because I religiously use trip odometer and have for ever.  Looked it up in the manual and I'll be damned if it isn't programmable.  You can turn the feature on and off with the trip button.
