When to Change Oil on Ohlins 30mm Fork Cartridges?
« on: July 14, 2015, 06:20:36 PM »

I was curious. I see that changing Fork Oil in the  Ohlins 30mm cartridges is a bit of work. How many Miles before it needs Changing?  Every year? Every 20,000 miles? 15,000? Or 10,000?
Curious.

I downloaded the manual for the Ohlins 30mm cartridge.  On 2nd to last page it states as quoted.
This product is designed for racing use only. Service and maintenance is recommended every 10 hours.

Service and maintenance is recommended every 10 hours.

So by definition the bike can no longer be ridden more than 5 hours from home or 10 hours from a pre-scheduled service appointment....   There goes the vacation road trips  :huepfenlol2: !

I quess that's for optimum performance. Don't know how it equates to street/highway use.  I emailed Howards for confirmation or his opinion. For everyday use it should be same as Traxxion, K-Tech,
Bitubo when not in race bikes. Hopefully those who have these other cartridges will add their thoughts. How about some help guys.

Howard recommends cleaning and new bushings every 10k miles for Harley baggers. Worn out bushings at 10k or you will wear out your fork tubes.
Ohlins says visually  inspect even 5000 km (3100 miles) change fluid every 2nd yr or 20,000 km (12,500 miles)

Something that costs as much as this shouldn't require a major service every other oil change when in just standard usage.  While even Mother Harley is finally stretching service intervals to something more in line with reality and more aligned with the automotive industry at large that replacing fork bushings would become a yearly exercise would keep me off this.  I didn't spend the money for it though so my opinion matters not even a tiny bit.

I asked basically the same thing (longevity) on HDF where Howard is predominant. Didn't get many replies, none from H...

Starting to love my HD Premium Cartridges, Shocks, when I had the Cartridges installed my Tech told me the Fork Oil needed to be changed at the 50k service, just like OE.

Notwithstanding the price of admission to these hi-end suspension components, the service intervals are a deal breaker for me :nervous:

10 hours is for racing components. I guess it's an oversight in this case that states 10 hours.

Never changed fork oil on any on my bikes (street) with Öhlins forks. On my race bike that's another thing. I used to change every 20 hours or so.

I will take the chance. The stock suspension is inferior to say the least.

Harley doesn't make Dual Premium Cartridges for the 49mm FXDWG front  ends. If they do, they aren't listed online on their parts website. I will keep checking.  I see online that what I already have is pretty good low maintenance.  That is The Ricor Intimidators and Progressive Springs combo.
