Defective mufflers
« on: January 16, 2007, 07:51:32 PM »

With less than 100 miles on the bike, FLHTCUSE2, the center tail pipe in the left muffler fell out. I now find that the muffler is on back order with no projected shipping date given. "Warrenty work that can't be accomplished!" That particular pipe was recovered and shows no indication of "ever" being welded in the muffler. I'm now wondering if H-D is finding this to be a common problem. Anyone else experiencing this defect?  [smiley=soapbox.gif]

Jeez!  That's freaky, but not at all surprising.  I'm not too sure the QC folks at HD have a clue.  And as for the backorder of your replacement, their repair parts division could use a good dose of Performance Based Logistics and Supply Chain Management training.

Why don't they pull supply from the frakking line.  The CVO production is even on a manual line.  Grab a damned muffler and send it to your dealer.

Then again maybe the inside of the muffler is like paint.  You can't see inside there most of the time so they really don't have to warranty it.

Don't mistake this event for a failed part. Maybe your FLHTCUSE2 was acting out a plea for help. It's telling you "I need more air". Obviously this was a case of strangulation. Now's the time to free your SEUC and give it the air it demands with a new set of pipes and an air kit. Just think of it as the humane thing to do.

Donny, Donny, Donny, I know it was a rhetorical question but lets get serious.

Inconvenience an existing customer from whom you already collected $35,000.00 or delay delivery on the next however many and not collect the $35k?

We all know how that story plays out.  I may need to take a break from the board here, I believe my sinacism is overtaking my OCDism.  ::)

I concur...now's the time to let your motor breathe. [smiley=smilie_eimer.gif]  Get those stock suzuki-sounding mufflers off of your bike and "open her up".  Love helping you spend your money.

Oh I agree with replacing both SE mufflers and then giving it more air. I plan on doing both as soon H-D lives up to it's end of the bargin. Ya see, I've got this little problem. I've already paid for 2 SE mufflers with the bike and I want the broken one replace. Period!  >:(

Rog, you know how someone crosses that often so very fine line from love to hate or devotee to cynic?  Harley Davidson steps on their toes so often they can't stand up well anymore and the accompanying lack of balance makes them fall from one side to the other.

Hey Grit:
Why not see if your dealer will credit the cost of the replacement towards the new pipes?

Well, crediting the cost of a factory replacement muffler towards a set of "non-Harley" mufflers is a good idea and would be fine with me ... but I think I already know the answer I'd get. I'll push that button just for the fun of it though!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]
