Trip to the Dealer
« on: July 16, 2015, 05:04:36 PM »

I have a 2104 SE Limited that makes more noise then a washing machine. Yes it has had a few recalls and they have been taken care of. I have had a loud whine coming from under me. They test drove the bike and low and behold they heard the same noise I was hearing. The tech ( who I trust ) told me the part of the noise was the rear tire. When leaning into the turns the noise gets louder and that apparently was the noise I was hearing. The other noise you are hearing ( wait what other noise) is being caused by the primary automatic chain adjuster. After our talk I explained to him I was going to do some engine work and would be pulling the motor. When the motor went back in I was going to install the Baker compensator and manual chain adjuster. He reply was GOOD MOVE.

So even the people that are working on these bikes know about the problems!!!!

My rear tire started to whine/roar in the curves after about 15k.  Based on many forum posts, this seems to be the norm with Dunlops.

Plus 1
Howling in the corners.
My 2014 was the first bike I noticed this on but my 2015 does it too.

Mine started about 4 or 5K. Well over 50% of my riding is 2 up. And we are not small people.

Also told this was normal.

Mine would be doing more than whining, 15K is more than double the life that I've ever gotten out of a rear tire

My back up bike is a 2012 Yamaha FJR and until I changed those tires they howled louder than any bad tire on any Harley I have ever owned.  There was plenty of thread but they had cupped real bad and howled so loud my wife could hear them through her ear plugs and full coverage helmet.  So I believe the tire theory, and the concerns in the Primary.

I also had the howl on my 2010. Waiting for it on the 2014 (10K so far)

I just rolled 14K on my bike today. I also got the rear tire replaced. The tech was correct. The whine is gone. Now I can hear other noises. Oh well. I did order the Baker compensator and manual adjuster. No date as to when it will arrive. I hope before I leave for Stugis!!!

Yes I am again a happy rider!!!!!

You know DOOD, you are correct. While the 04's had a few problems all in all they were GREAT BIKES!!!! I can't see me ever getting rid of her. Looking forward to some riding on the Ole Girl on Thursday!!! The only noise I will hear coming from that bike will be the rumble from the D&D Fat Kat!!!!!

The howling tire syndrome has increased with the tire width increases! All you can do is check tire pressures regularly and run MAX pressure allowed. 3-4lb low will cause a tire to heat, up shortening rubber life, wearing flatter in the middle sooner, making it "whine" on the corners. At least 45lbs in rear, 40 front. fwiw twinotter

Well there are some important changes from 2004. Like handling and brakes actually work 10 years later.

So the recommendation on tire pressure is 36 up front and 40 in the rear (2014).  I only bump this up a little when I plan to ride two for a longer trip due to the extra eight. Higher pressure will wear the tire out quicker especially towards the middle.  To me safety is my most important aspect and tire are so very critical. What do most of you run the pressure at?
