Deal or Dud?
« on: July 16, 2015, 05:52:41 PM »

I am about ready to move up to the touring class. Still researching and found this. Just wondering if it is a good deal or not. I was also considering an 03 Screamin Eagle Road King ($12K) with the 103" stroker or a 2012 Road King Custom ($17K). Just kickin the tires and looking for opinions.

If you're looking for a Road King that 07 looks like a nice low mileage one. I haven't been keeping up with the prices of those particular bikes lately? You might want to seriously consider the 04-05 CVO Electra Glides. Best of all worlds with options and accessories. It has that Street Glide look with all the Electra Glide accessories.  :2vrolijk_21:

I had and 03 SERK and it was a great bike, but an 03 is pushing 13 yrs old.  That might be a little long in the tooth.  I'd go with a newer bike.

09 or newer.  The new frame is day and night difference from the baggers prior to 09 and the ABS brakes is icing on the cake.  Maybe look at an 09 or 10 CVO Street Glide.

I'll probably get some people upset on this but after joining this site and all the information I have gathered I feel the 07 is one of the worst years to purchase a CVO followed closely by the 08.  I have an 08 but I know quite a few people on this site that had numerous motors put in on warranty.  I wouldn't want to have to eat that cost now.  Of course there are exceptions and as they say the squeaky wheel gets the grease so the people that had the problems did the screaming.  I'm still convinced that the 07 & 08 are some of the worst and the 03 to the 06 are some of the best years.  This is just a personal opinion as I don't think you can say every 07 sucks and every 05 runs perfect.

Hey Ray!  I bought a 2014 Street Glide Special with 1700 miles from Heritage.  Great dealer.  Put 3500 on last year, 3900 so far this year.  What a nice ride. From an 06 to a 14 is huge.
7 year warranty.  I think the 103 has now matured, compensator, etc.  First year 110 was horrible. Been there, traded that.

JC hit the nail on the head.  I couldn't believe how much better my '09 handled compared to previous years, and now the '14 & '15s are even better.

I prefer the new frame and the 180 rear tire. However, I made the change in a huge leap from an older RK to a newer CVO Ultra so I got the combined effect
of many changes:

old~new frame
130~180 tire
windshield~bat wing
silence~radio (&XM & NAV)
Classic bags~ King tourpak
5-speed~6-speed
5gal tank~6gal tank
88" ~110" engine
71hp~120hp (both after mods)
+
CVO equipment
ABS brakes
cruise
heated seat
heated grips

I actually don't even care to ride the king any more.
I'm a bit jaded now, but I still would choose the '09 and up frame, regardless the details.

Don't recommend the SE for 2007. First year of the 110. Could be fine but....

when I was ready to move up from my 01 CVO I to started looking at almost the same bike,
found two of them, low miles

one I also learned about night and day for the newer frame and the ride.

and two and this is the big one
the 13 I got was only a few thousand more and I got the more modern technology, better ride and comfort of
knowing I should not have an expense issue as if I had bought a 14 year old bike

if you really like the model, check out Ron's Rad Rides, he has or had an 07 that was Sweet!

'09 up to get ABS and larger rear tire. The frame and swing-arm were also updated but to the average rider the ABS is the most usefull and safe addition, Larger rear tire is ascetically much better looking if nothing else.

The 07's are fine as long as you sink enough $$$$ to fix all or replace with better. Trouble is by that time you have invested so much $$$ that some of us are just to afraid to start the process over. I don't care about the new frame and all because the MOCO only wants our $$$$ and they still provide you a pinion runout that they think is acceptable up to 12 thou. :soapbox: And yes I still have my 07 for above reasons.

I have advised every friend of mine considering a used HD tourer to get  09 and later. If your budget is tight and you must save money buying a very old bike then realize you are also making a sacrifice of quality and performance. Every time I drive up behind an older touring bike, with the skinny tire I cringe.

Hey if you lovers of the older bikes are offended I am sorry but if you drive a new one you will have to admit they are worlds ahead.

You guys have my head spinnin' now.

What I liked about the 03 was the 103 Stroker. Just sent the chills up my back. I have a feeling this bike will hold more value due to limited production vs. overproduction on the newer bikes. Still might consider this one as a stepping stone until I get to the point where I can really do some distance riding.

With the talk about at least an 09 for the frame and add a couple of years to that for an O twelve I can have the new frame and the 103. For about 4g's more. Gonna have to lay back and wait for the one special bike to bite me I guess.

Any flaws in my thinking here?
