CVO Deluxe….Heavy breather or stock?
« on: July 21, 2015, 05:19:42 AM »

I'm getting Vance and Hines pipes and wondering if I should also change the air filter.

Has anyone changed the original air cleaner? Any advantages?

Don't believe you need to change it with the exhaust as far as airflow is concerned - iit should be set up properly from stock.

No need to change the air filter. The stock filter already supplies an ample amount of fresh air....However, the free air flow through your new pipes require you to change the mapping of your engine by either getting the SE Super Tuner or another product to change the set-up.

I agree with the above logic.

On a different note however, I put V&H Long Shots on a Heritage 96ci and added the SE Heavy Breather and a PCV.  The Breather is awesome, both in terms of looks and performance, plus I like the K&N air filter aspect.  Never had a single problem with the setup, but you're running a different animal entirely.
I wouldn't go to a heavy breather unless you just wanted the bada*# looks!

Thanks guys….I'm not so sure the Heavy breather would look any better than the original one.

It will be interesting to see if the V & H (Big radius) will improve fuel economy or not.

the cvo deluxe comes with a ventilator ac.  if you change it to the heavy breather, the flow will not be any different.  they are both 'free flowing' ac.  you would just be changing it for the looks.

The Harley Heavy breather is the best breather available, and offers two more foot pounds of torque over the ventilator which I believe is on the CVO Deluxe.  The Ventilator is a good high flow air cleaner, however the ventilator is better.  I would be running one on my 15 SERGU if it fit.  I have run it on my last two CVO road glides.

I put the SE Ventilator on my CVO Deluxe, it has the same air flow as the original but better looks. The heavy breather gives you some more air and probably power but my personal believe is that the open pipes together with the SE Tuner gives you enough power. The heavy breather also looks great but might get in your way when you use the front bar foot rests. But this all personal taste and up to you.

Good luck and safe ride

The heavy breather, in back to back tests is 2 foot pounds of torque better than the ventilator.

This picture is one version of the heavy breather, there is a round version of the oval one you have pictured also.

The info on the one and only SE Heavy Breather can be found here;

http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/se-heavy-breather-air-cleaner-kit

Part Number:  28716-10A

In my opinion, it's the coolest looking one they (or anybody) makes.  It says "check me out...I'm bad!"  And no, it does not get in your way with highway pegs, although I only have a 33" inseam.  It's the only breather kit I've ever gotten massive comments about.

The CVO Deluxe has the so called Mustache Engine Guard (see page 281 in HD parts catalogue) with integrated highway pegs. I am afraid that a heavy breather will get in your way if you want to rest your feet on them. I installed additional highway pegs on the side of the bar but nevertheless on long rides I enjoy shifting my legs and also use the pegs ON the bar.
At the it depends on what you want - the heavy breather looks awesome and probably gives you a bit more air than the ventilator filter which also looks great but leaves a bit more room for your legs...up to you.
I rest my case and wish everybody a safe ride and a good weekend
