Oil Dip Stick
« on: January 17, 2007, 03:01:06 PM »

The chrome cap comes off of my SERG dipstick on occassion - nothing a little superglue won't fix, but I was thinking of going to a dipstick with a temperature gauge on it but I really like the old style (mechanical ?) vs. the LED but I don't see they make one (mechanical) for the '01 SERG.  I wonder why and if anyone has any experiences changing their dipsticks out.

Thanks in advance.

Blue, I've been looking for one of those since they first came out with the oil tanks in the trans. pan. The stick is on a swivel and I don't think a normal thermometer type, like on my 4-speed, will work. I've never seen it anyway. If you find on let me know. I bought the Temp/Level LCD one for my new bike. ;) Hoist! 8-)

Blue, I've had that happen to both a stock dipstick and an LED temp dipstick on my SEEG. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Haven't seen the mechanical style temp dipstick you're talking about, but if you find out it works, it might be worth a try!

Thanks "Hoist" and 103HunDer for the feedback.  103 - when the LED came apart did it still work after you put it back together?  I would have thought that some sensor or wire or ?? would have been damaged.  Sounds like all of these things coming apart is fairly common - in comparison, I haven't experienced any trouble with the one on my '01 Fatboy.  I've looked around some and haven't found the plain gauge variety for the SERG yet, but if I do, I'll post info on it.

Cheers,

Blue...they came out with a "new and improved" version of the LED dipstick that is supposed to take care of the problem of the top coming off.  I've had mine on for 7 months now with no problems, but there is a process for taking off and putting on.

Terry, mine was just a temp dipstick, not like the oil level and temp ones they have now, but it had the "turn clockwise to lock" cam set-up in it and still fell apart. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Blue, it still worked fine . . . . . the chrome part is just a cover, like on the stock dipstick.  I just used a dab of silcone and re-attached it to the housing.  Later on, I ended up having oil inside the display, so I $h!t-canned it and went back to a stock dipstick, but I don't think it was related to the chrome cover coming off 12 months earlier.

My temp/level LCD dipstick is for an '07. It's a different style from the earlier ones. It appears to screw into the filler neck (I have the dipstick but not the bike yet). And the top of it is held by screws now. It's only good for an '07 though according to the catalog. Hoist! 8-)

Blue, I have the LCD dipstick.  I took it from my 02 Ultra when I got my SEUC, so it has been in use for about 18 months without any problems.  I'm not sure if the process for removing it is the same as that to which Terry refers for his scooter.  For mine I have to rotate it counterclockwise 90 degrees and pull it out.  Works like a champ and I have not had any problems with it.  I am, however, afraid of it being stolen, which would be quite inconvenient, so I keep my stock dipstick in one of my saddlebags just in case.

Same process for removal, Henry...turn counterclockwise 1/4 turn to get it off and the opposite to put it back on.

Brian...it seems I remember reading on here somewhere about people having problems with the temp/level type as well, but earlier on...at any rate, seems they've got the problem fixed now...

I'm supposed to reverse the process to reinstall it?  [smiley=confused5.gif]  I never have. Perhaps i need to dig out those instructions again, because I have been simply popping it in........without turning it except to make sure it is straight.

Thanks everyone for the follow-up comments.  Looks like LED may be the only alternative - an interesting situation was brought up by Bagger ....  that it's such a neat gadget that he's afraid someone might steal it right off the bike.  Maybe I should leave mine on because chances are if someone wanted it and gave IT a good tug, they'd end up on their "keester" when the chrome cap came loose  ;D

Now that's funny.  Never thought of it that way.  Perhaps something slick on the side of mine will serve the same purpose.  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

You may want to look at the instructions, as I believe you don't twist when you install because of the possibility of damage. I can't get to basement to read my instructions right now, but I'm thinking you push it straight in to put it on, and only twist when removing (mines is the temp gauge only no level gauge). Gary,
That's my point.  I don't recall reading anything directing twisting after or during pushing of the dipstick, but I'm gonna dig out the instructions anyway when I get home.  I'll put it this way:  for the past 18 months I've been twisting that thing 90 degress counterclockwise as I lift it out, and simply pushing it back in.  It works flawlessly.
Gary don't even think of trying to move on my account.  Just keep posting.  Get better quick.

If I'm not mistaken, there is only one way for the newer version to go in because of the shape of the stick itself being more rectangular in shape (the part that senses the temp/level), so you put it in the same way it comes out, then line up the readout horizontally...it's only a quarter turn.  We're all talking about three different part numbers here...
