Jeep Infotainment System Hacked
« on: July 21, 2015, 07:03:10 PM »

Saw this on the news tonight - Hack of connected car raises alarm over driver safety.

With all of the issues concerning the "Rushed More" infotainment system the thought of someone hacking into it and taking control of some of the can bus systems on a bike is scary!! :nervous: :shocked2:

Ugh! I can see it now at the service departments.

"My bike is possessed"

Service tech replies, "They all do that"

This is a serious issue, but so far I haven't seen much evidence that anyone with the power to actually do something about it is actually doing anything.  Cheap electronics has made it easy for companies to add all sorts of crap to products that we don't really need and lived quite well without for over a hundred years, and now the average vehicle is viewed as more of a platform for electronic toys than it is a means to get from here to there.  Just look at the advertising for cars these days, and 99% of the emphasis is on the infotainment systems, the keyless security and ignition systems, opening your liftgate by waving your foot under the bumper, etc..  Every bit of that has nothing to do with the real purpose of the vehicle, but consumers now care more about the toys than they do the important stuff like how the vehicle actually drives, handles, and all that other stuff that used to be pretty important.

The part of the story I really love is how the bureaucrat mentioned coming up with new regulations to address the hacking issue.  When I stopped laughing, I thought about finding a way to contact the idiot and mention the fact that his employer can't even protect the personnel records of it's 24 million employees from Chinese hackers, so I doubt they can wave a magic regulatory wand and protect millions of vehicles from hackers.

Well that is the American way to deal with it. We are not known to be the smartest guys in the room

Seriously people. What's your concern on a HD. Hijack the system so your aux power won't work? There are no critical systems on your bike besides ignition, worst case it stops!

If you can't ride  without ABS you should not ride anyways

What if they take control of the brake system, deactivate the ABS, and lock up the brakes?  Or shut off the engine and your brake lights in bumper-to-bumper 70 mph traffic?

Fortunately guys, Harley hasn't included internet connectivity so this doesn't apply to them (yet).  However, if they eventually take my suggestion and add that connectivity so they can do automatic software patches every month like Microsoft, then you will have to watch out for hackers.  Right now I guess the worst that could happen is someone hacks the satellite info to your navigation system, such that it tells you to turn right when it should have been left.  Oh, you say it already does that?  See, it's not Harley's fault, it's those damned hackers!

Then you get squished like a bug and die a horrible death while being dragged along an abrasive highway while being gored with debris from your own bike.  Gotta love the Internet.

Not sure it would be that isolated Jerry.  There are already software updates for ABS, BCM and other bits.  If over-the-air connectivity hits (no pun intended) the bikes why would we think it would be isolated to just the nav system?

I know we think of the more dramatic hacks but what if someone could and did enter the system and chose to be subtle?  Changing the bias of linked brakes?  Harley being Harley we don't expect them to be anywhere near close to getting such a system right the first time (sad but true that this is the expectation).  So it boggles the mind a bit to think of what could be done and how it more dramatically impacts the gyro stabilized device that is a motorcycle as opposed to a four wheeled cage.

But what if some sicko hacker decided to get into the system and make the infotainment and GPS system function properly???

you know... just to show it was possible...

Even if it has Internet Connectivity unless it connects to a service like U Connect it won't be a danger.    The amount of time it takes to connect through a wireless system is less then the time a bike would be in range.  You'd need a hacker spending hours riding within a few hundred feet of you to hack a connection.

My understanding of the jeep hack was it was carried out form home by hacking the U Connect service and then connecting to the jeep through that.  Harleys Infotainment system does not support a remote management console to unlock the doors when you lock your keys in or tell you when you need an oil change.  So until they come out with a new system your safe.  If that follows typical HD state of the art mandates and time frames we should have internet right about the same time we're born with it already integrated into our brain.
