What is happening??? EFI failure?
« on: September 26, 2004, 03:44:51 PM »

Let me preface my story/question with the facts.  3900 miles, the only mechanical mods are: a SE a/c kit, SE race fueler, and SE 2pc slip-ons.

So I went out to the garage this morning... turned the switch on and noticed some unusual letters on the radio display.  Didn't give it much thought... think it said "L I F" or something to that effect.

I hit the start button and the bike turned over strong but wouldn't start. So I tried again.  Still not starting.  I smelled fuel.  so I looked around and found that there was excess gas coming out of the a/c housing dripping onto the cam cover.  I pulled the plugs and they were soaked.

I gave the bike time to dry, put in fresh plugs and tried to start it again.  Same thing.  So I gave it some gas in the midst of starting and she started to run momentarily (VERY, VERY BADLY) and brown and white smoke poured out of the exhaust.  I kept her running a few seconds with the throttle hoping it would clear up.

She shut herself down.  I looked around again and found the same fuel at the a/c and on the cam cover, and this time inside of the exhaust tips.  So much so that it spilled out onto the floor.

WHAT THE F@%$ IS GOING ON???? HELP PLEASE [smiley=nixweiss.gif]!

Do you have any more codes popping up on your radio?  Your owners manuel has some translations for the various codes.......otherwise, call the dealership (service dept.).

No additional codes showed up.  And I never figured out what the original one said.  I pulled the seat and noticed that the SE race fueler wasn't lighting up, as usual, upon ignition.  All connections still intact.  So I pulled the gas tank and removed it.  Changed the oil/filter.  Installed new plugs... and whatdaya know?  Started... no more fuel waterfall.  Apparently, this part and any other DFO will cause a fuel injection overflow upon failure.  4 months old and a HD part takes a crap?  I can't say I'm suprised... just very annoyed... and grateful I was in my own garage when it happened.  Dealer says it's safe to install another one "only the second one we've heard of failing".  I think they can have it back and I'll be doing a download cartridge.

I heard from my local dealer that they had more than one problem with the RT and were leary on putting them on.
