What did you pay for your 1k Service Call?
« on: July 25, 2015, 06:49:56 PM »

I know a lot of you guys do your own work, and I will too eventually...but for the 1k service, I wanted the dealer to do it.  Besides, they took care of the saddlebag recall and the Boom!Box 1.19.1 update all at the same time, and I wanted them to make sure everything else was AOK this first time around.

Anyway, on to the purpose of this thread...

IF YOU LET A DEALER PERFORM YOUR 1K SERVICE CALL, WHAT DID YOU PAY FOR THE VISIT?

For myself, I paid $260 yesterday with tax at Little Rock HD, but I had AMSOil put in all three holes.  Took 'em 2-1/2 hours to finish it up.

My local dealer charges $500 for each interval service on a CVO Harry and they use Syn3. That's at least $120+ more than anyone within a reasonable distance in my area. They would probably put in whatever fluids you carried along or install anything different they have available if you insisted. I'll be doing fluid changes myself for the obvious reason and have been stocking up on Red line fluids for both bikes.

Most All dealers will charge you the book rate/hours required to do services (1k, 5k, 10k, etc.) however dealers will set their hourly rate which will vary from dealer to dealer so prices will fluctuate accordingly. Sad part of this is that most (dealer) techs will not do all that is required (go down the checklist and check everything that is supposed to be checked on services because they have several bikes they are working on at the same time to maximize their time and profit <IE: how much they will make that day>) so most times you are paying a lot for a fluid change and not getting a complete (by the checklist) service. If a person doesn't want to do the service themselves (I fall into that category) then find you a "good" independent that you trust and you will pay less and get a better service done on your bike.

I paid zero on first service since it's my dealers incentive on purchasing a new bike from them. Otherwise, I'd do my own servicing with my own fluids & OEM filter.

Less chance this way of finding a scratch or ding on the bike from service people.

RGlideK, I too do most of my own service.  I did let my dealer do the 1k and your price sounds lower than most.  My last HD Ultra it was included with the purchase and that dealer did it in less than an hour and think I got what I paid for it.  This time I paid for it at a dealer that usually does a good job.  Have no way of knowing if they did the whole checklist but have not found a problem with anything.  Coming up on 5k and plan on doing it myself.  The worst part is the darn oil filter always gets oil on the motor and front of the engine no mater how hard I try to use a catch funnel under filter and punch a hole in filter and drain it before removing.

As time goes on my first service costs less and less.

Bought 2 years pre-paid maintenance.  1099.00

So Far I have had the 1K, 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K done on my bike and it's 10 months old now.  So right now 220.  Figure I will have 4 more service while pre paid.  That will lower my cost to 122.00 per service.  I think that's fair  8)

I had the dealer do the 1K. It was free but they would have charged $250.  They did show me the check list when they were done with the tech's sign off.

Wow!  You're the first guy to get his money's worth on this thread so far, Dave!  Smart thinking!  Sounds like you're going to score big time on that deal.

And it sounds to me like I got luck with my 1k price.  I'm going to check two local wrenches in the Mountain Home area, and then decide whether to do it myself or not from now on.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but IME, I don't believe many techs are doing that whole checklist, at least not with the diligence we expect; more like a quick look-over that nothing is loose.  Pencil-whipping the checklist is faster than actually doing the checks.  The end result is paying ~ $400 for a fluid change.

RGlideKid, compared to prices at many stealers, you got a good deal.

FLSTFI Dave, IMO, you ride enough miles to get close to getting your money's worth, although I find $122 for an oil & filter change too high, especially if we provide the oil (I use AMSOil and K&N filters).  For me, another drawback is that I would often need service while on the road...can't remember if dealer reimburses for service done elsewhere?

I paid about $350.00 in 2008 for the 1k service on my 09. I only did it for warranty reasons. Since the next required service is at 5k you are really only going 4k from the 1k mile service to the 5K service. The service writers and mechanics at the HD dealership are very personable and don't seem to care if you flash another map over the stock one. However when I did my 5K service I was a little bit mad because the oil drain plug and the primary and tranny plug were just barely tight enough. I mean if they were any looser you could have removed them without a wrench. Since then I have torqued everything to spec and then give it just a little more to make myself feel comfortable. I also mark the bold head and case with permanent marker so if I have to change without a torque wrench I know pretty much that the drain plugs etc. are close to being right on.CAHDBIKER

Have been doing my own services for years, so I haven't paid attention to current HD service costs.  Wow, $600 for a 20k service...
