Switched to AMS Oil in the SERGU for the 1k.
« on: July 25, 2015, 06:59:27 PM »

I had the 1k service call performed yesterday and had them put AMS Oil in all 3 holes.  20w-50 V-Twin in the engine, AMS Primary oil, and 75-150 Severe Gear in the tranny.
In the Ozarks coming home today, it was very hot, well over 110 with the heat index and really high humidity.  I noticed a lot less valve train noise, especially going up hill in the low 2000's rpm, and a quieter engine in general.  Shifting was smoother and quieter, especially dropping her down into first from neutral at a light.
I've used AMS Oil in all 4 of my Harleys and never been inclined to change.  Was happy with the results today as well, and had expected no less.

:2vrolijk_21: At 1000 I went with Mobil 1 V Twin Motor Oil, Bel Ray 75-140 for the Trans and HD Formula plus for the primary.

+1 for amsoil.  have not put in the FLHTKSE yet (450 miles so far this week, since new).  will change all fluids at 500 miles and replace with amsoil.  On my 04 FLSTC, just changing to amsoil dropped my oil temps by 15*.  interested to see what it will do in this shiny new 110" SE engine.

I've always heard the sooner the better changing from regular to synthetic, but you'd have to do your own research there.  AMSoil is great oil, and they make a whole family of good oils for V-twins.  But any premium oil has got to be better than the run of the mill oils out there.  Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil-1, the list goes on and on.  But in the long run, your engine will be happier and you should be able to tell the difference in engine/tranny noise output and perhaps even gas mileage and heat reduction.  These bikes are too expensive and powerful to not use the best oils you can.  Just my opinion, though...

Yes.  All 3 holes get synthetic.

Check this out:  http://www.amsoil.com/lookup/motorcycle/2015/harley-davidson/flhx-cvo-road-glide-ultra/1801/us-volume/

Just fill in for your bike on the left side, and then take or leave their recommendations.  They have many other oils besides these.

I started to post some thoughts on oil, but didn't want to inflame another oil thread.  Rather, I've attached an article that is very revealing regarding the marketing of oil vs performance.

Ha ha.  More oil talk.  Higher cost oil doesn't mean it's better.  It may just mean that certain manufacturers spend more on marketing and have to pass these costs on to the buyer. Read the attached link, it's very telling.

Good Article...however I will purchase the motor cycle oil, something about a good warm and fuzzy feeling I have by doing that, cost really not an issue I have ever had when it comes to My HD.

Hmmmm.  Interesting article.  But one article does not the gospel make, as we hear so often in this or any bike forum.
For instance, watch this video.  Eric Buell saying wonderful things about...AMSoil
http://www.harley-performance.com/amsoil-vs-harley.html

Given the choice, and I do still have a choice...I will be using $15 a quart oil in my $40k bike, rather than some brand I've never heard much about for $9 a quart.

It's funny you discounted the independent study I posted, then counter with what appears to be an an Amsoil ad with a video of Buell endorsing their product...for which I'm sure Eric was compensated. I'm not shocked Amsoil recommended their own product.

Amsoil makes good products, but the idea that motorcycles require motorcycle specific oil is a marketing myth designed to enrich the oil manufacturers.

Not trying to fault your logic, but you seem to be chosing oil for your $40k bike based on the cost of the oil.  Out of curiosity, when shopping for bike insurance or loan rates would you do the same?Sorry, couldn't resist.  Safe riding.

I think his point was that there is an article or a thousand for any given product for or against. Me personally, I look for personal testimony (word of mouth) when I am researching products or services I am not familiar with, like RGlideKid gave.

Dang, Mark...I wasn't trying to get people to change oils just because I happen to like the stuff.  I just know that some folks like to hear good news on these forums some times.  If you don't like AMSoil, please address that in a new thread because I'd really be interested to know your reasons, as they may influence my future oil decisions.
And just so you'll know, I initially chose my bike insurance based on the fact I thought they gave the best value.  But I keep it because when my wife of 22 years was killed in Aug '10 when we hit a deer, they treated me with the utmost respect and I don't forget that.
And I don't do loans.  Banks like it too much when we borrow from them.

You've missed my point...Amsoil makes great products, as does Redline, and many other manufacturers.  I happen to use Redline's transmission fluid because it performs better than the 20w50 that came in the tranny.  However, as the independent study points out, there is no requirement for motorcycle specific crankcase oil, which is always priced higher by the manufacturers.  That's all I was trying to point out.  I've reached the point that if I can perform a fluids change for half the price - and still use quality products - I'm all for that.
