Oh boy.  I can see it now.  Just like the lady that sued McDonalds because her coffee was too hot and it burned her, someone will get in an accident while wearing this shirt (but not the real belt), and then sue the T-shirt company...and win.

I assume that shirt was supposed to be a humorous item, but I also assume some geniuses will think it's a great idea and buy them to sneak past cops enforcing seat belt laws.  In this day and age, I find it depressing that we still have people who would rather thumb their noses at rules and authorities than protect themselves from injury or death.

Driving home from the hardware store last weekend, pulled up to a traffic light and had an old car pull up on my left.  Damage front and rear, and the airbags had been deployed and not replaced (bags just cut out, metal bracket still sticking out of the dash on passenger side).  It was apparent the collision happened quite some time back, not just recently.  And sitting in the front seats were two fine young male specimens, proudly riding around without seat belts.  I guess being really stupid is a badge of honor among a certain segment of the population.  Probably the same segment that will spend the rest of it's life sponging off the taxpayers.

Ok, I wear a helmet.  And a seatbelt.  All the time.  I do think it's dumb to skip either one.  And with modern lids I really don't understand wearing a novelty helmet.  I have a buddy who wears one.  And we live in a state where he wouldn't need to wear it at all!  :confused5:

But, I maintain that as an American I have the right to be stupid if it doesn't harm you.  And please don't give me the insurance cost argument.  Those numbers are so skewed on both sides of the argument that they're meaningless at this point.  I can offer a peer reviewed study that says anything you want as to the actual costs.

So while I choose to be smarter than this shirt's customer base, I applaud the designer for coming up with a way to allow some personal freedom and choice where it should be.  Remember, the argument used by us as to why everyone should wear a helmet or seatbelt is the same argument used by safety people who'd like to see the Vision Zero Initiative (http://www.visionzeroinitiative.com/) from Sweden over here in the states.  If that ever goes through to the extent some would like it enabled, then none of us will be riding our scooters ever again.
