How I Spent My Sturgis Vacation
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:38:42 PM »

I had a free spot in Deadwood with friends and it would have been my second Sturgis experience.  BUT months ago, I committed to something much bigger and I had no idea how big.  I came across something on the Special Olympics World Games - 2015.  I had no experience with them but they were looking for volunteers and I could not think of a better cause so I filled out the volunteer application, submitted to a background check and attended training both in person and via the internet.  Great news, I'm neither a convicted felon nor a child predator!    :nervous:

They asked how much time I could spare and I said that if they were going to send me downtown, give me long days to minimize my travel time.  That lead to a week of 12 -14 hour days.   :huepfenlol2:  I did get a free pass on the Metrolink Train.  I've run law firms and managed real estate portfolios.  So, I was assigned to be a Table Tennis Athletes and Officials Assistant (minion).  It was the best week I've ever had because I worked directly with the Athletes and Coaches (Saints)!  :huepfenjump3:   I shagged ping pong balls, found athletes and escorted them to their matches and later medals and helped maintain the competition area.  I speak and understand some French which was no help.  I know a couple of sign words but quickly learned valuable "smile, gesture, wink, hug and high five" language.  Sometimes it was absolute pandemonium!  But in the end and really from the first few minutes, I received far more than I gave.  Far, far more!

So, ladies and gentlemen, if you ever get a chance to do something like this, no matter what you have to give up.  Please do it!  I promise you'll be happily walking on air!

Table Tennis venue at the Los Angeles Convention Center:

First day singles competitors with a liason (teal) and scorekeeper (purple).  The shorter young man is from Indonesia.  His name is "Rocky Rocky."  I called him "Rocky Balboa" and you should have seen his face light up.  Both of them could beat any of us, by the way.

Doubles Competition!

Post game.

Medals Ceremony!

Proud Medal Winners!  One of my Athletes kept saying to me, "Nice hat!"  They were pretty cool so I gave it to him.  Soon after, another got my pack as a souvenir.  They wanted my shirt but I did not have anything else to put on.   :o

Some Of The Finest People I've Ever Had The Privilege To Work With.

Thanks for looking at my unabashed plug for Special Olympics!  If I ever get to do something like this again, I'm dragging all of my friends with me because I know they'll / you'll love it.  Promise!   :2vrolijk_21:

That was very special and requires a lot of commitment!  You should be proud! My wife helps out locally as well. She gets a lot of personal rewards from the experience.

Volunteered at a local event some years back with my daughter doing horseshoes and volleyball competition and really enjoyed it.  Think it must have been a preliminary event to the bigger regional events.  Always meant to go back but havent done it yet.

Wow, Greg.
What a sacrifice on your part, and a wonderful one at that.  You must be walking on cloud nine after your time there, and you have every right to be proud.  There is no doubt in my mind that you will have made a lasting and positive impression on those kids.
We never know sometimes how much or how deeply we can touch another person, but we do exactly that when we perform selfless acts of kindness like this.  They will never forget their time at the Special Olympics this year, and I know you won't either.
Good job!

Bless you Greg! I have a 26 year old daughter who was born pre mature and has been in a wheelchair - all her life. She just had her birthday with many friends. I have an Ultra with a sidecar I take her out in. So at her birthday, I rode Her into a park illegally to be greeted by Her many friends cheering for her. What I find so amazing - they are true friends with absolutely no judgment - they just Love each other unconditionally. Not sure how my daughter does it but she is the happiest person I know and she goes through so much discomfort. I sometimes wonder who's the disabled one!! Hats off to you my friend!!!!

Greg, Sturgis is the same each year, we are the ones that change. You could never have as good a time in Sturgis as you had helping at the Special Olympics World Games. What you gained from helping the athletes and being a part of such a great event far outweighs anything you could find in South Dakota.

Thank you for the kind comments.  Yes, I'm walking on Cloud 9.  I hope we all get to do something like this in the future.

Special needs people are special.  They may be lacking in certain areas but are often gifted in others.  Helping them have fun as in Vern's photo (link above) is wonderful!  Trust me, this was a privilege, not a sacrifice in the least.  I'm sure all of the folks in the green shirts above would agree.  I truly do not mean to bang my drum here but hopefully, to show what a wonderful, worthwhile experience it was and is.

Thanks again!

Greg, Great job!  It is nice to see someone step up and go for it.  I have a brother in-law who is special needs.  There is nothing like the look on his face when something thrills him.  One year my wife and I where looking for xmas gifts and she said that this one item would be perfect and I, in my foolish material thinking,  thought it would not be enough.  So we bought him two gifts.  Mine was ok but when he got the one I thought was not enough, he was ear to ear grin.  I learned an important lesson that Christmas.

Oh by the way, I like how used the word "convicted".
