Really need help in choosing Go-Pro Accessories
« on: August 07, 2015, 11:52:55 AM »

I'm about as electronically challenged as one could possible be.  I'm constantly calling out to my wife for her assistance on using anything after a calculator.  Cell phone, yeah I have one but I don't get reception out here and haven't used it all year.  I have a Radar detector that I switch from my 08 SERK to my Yamaha FJR.  I ordered a new Garmin 660LM with some goodies so I can switch it from bike to bike.  Wiring things is not a problem.  Anyway my wife and I would like to purchase the Silver Go-Pro Hero 4.  Now what I need is assistance on choosing the right batteries, and some mounting ideas that will take some of the guess work out.  I don't mind the helmet side camera but I won't put one on top of my head.  We plan to use it for family functions as well but the primary use will be to record some of our rides.  I would rather make the right purchase once rather than try to save a buck and have to make a second purchase.

Going back to the Skyline area the second week of September and off to places unknown in the Shenandoah Valley area.   We usually don't plan a week trip,  we have had great luck just winging it and head out somewhere.  I would really appreciate any positive or negative comments you are willing to share on the Go-Pro.  I trust my brothers & sisters from this site rather than the sales people at any retail store.

Thanks

I almost got one last week.  Our local HD dealer has a GoPro stand and with all the latest goodies.  And with a 15% off sale it was almost too good to pass up.  For now I have other priorities, but I am really interested in the latest offering http://shop.gopro.com/hero4/hero4-session/CHDHS-101.html

This new model is a lot smaller and is still compatible with the remote.  My thought is to strap the remote to the handlebars and take burst shots instead of doing a lot of video.  I agree with not putting the camera on the top.  I don't want to look like a Telle Tubby!   :party3:

Looking at the mounts, it seems possible to do either a side or front mount with the new unit.  For now, I will stick with my cheapie digital.  I keep it hanging around my neck on a lanyard.  Easy to pick up and blast off a few shots - usually one will turn out pretty good.  After a while you get a knack for "shooting from the hip".  You certainly don't want to even try and aim using the screen!  Another hint for this type of shooting is to super glue a button to the shutter switch and/or power.  Makes it easier to feel the buttons with gloves (if you don't use fingerless, that is).

Good luck and I look forward to seeing / hearing about your setup and trip!

Best Regards,

M

I just bought the Go-Pro 4 sessions yesterday, there are a thousand different ways you can mount that...Amazon has all the different mounting kits at what seems to be nearly half the price of what a regular store would sell them plus walley world has the motorcycle mounts, ours came with 2 mounts and i put it on the side of my helmet, doesn't look bad on the side, its durable and the 4 session is waterproof and over hundred dollars cheaper then the black which is bigger and not waterproof and it has to go in a case. You can mount it on your winshield also but I wouldn't stick it to the paint....it takes darn good video. not sure about the silver go-pro.

I got the Gopro 4 silver also...I would use ram mounts instead of the gopro mounts....I use the mounts on the crash bar, handle bars and luggage rack,,,We also use a selfie stick...look at the video from Myrtle beach, we only use one camera to film the trip...This is the second video we made while on a trip with the bike...I would practice filming crazy stuff 1st before using it on the bike..playing pool, ping pong, riding in the truck, etc....Also make sure you tether the camera incase the mount breaks..

As stated there are hundreds of different ways to mount.  Just to throw it out for info, an outfit nammed Hog Tag Collar makes a pretty nice upper fork clamp to mount go pro's.  They also have some external power connectors and other things for the older gopro's.  I have one but have no other affiliation with the company.

I have a Hero 2 with an add on WiFi back pack and a Hero 3+.  All of the mounts work on both cameras.  I have 3 batteries for each camera and 3 32 gig memory cards for each.

I have used helmet mounts but not a real fan of that spot.  I have used a chest harness, which works on my softails.  I have used the suction mount on the fairing on my Street Glide.  I have used a Hog Tag Collar on the Street Glide also.  I have a Ram mount which I have not tried yet.  I tried the GoPro Jaws Flex mount but was not impressed.

Make sure that the PC that you use for editing has lots of memory and a fast CPU.

Well just tested my go pro 4 session today, something wrong with the lens because it only records the left side at about 10-12 oclock and all the telephone poles and fence post look like slinky's. and it has a lot of wind noise. LOL can't win for losing, will return it tomorrow and exchange it.

+1 on wasabi power- good product that is much less expensive than the gopro brand. I think we bought two (3 total). Battery life is fine, but we wanted extras for those times when you aren't able to recharge.

Here is the 1st video I made using the Gopro...https://vimeo.com/125388146#t=0s, The camera was mounted on the handle bars and crash bar for all the footage...I had the settings at 1080 at 30fps at either super wide or wide....I am starting to learn that road conditions, rpm of the bike, how its mounted can cause the camera to shake....I never use the hogcoller but I have seen pretty good video using it, helmet mount is good also and chest mount......Using a selfie sticks works pretty good if you have a passenger controlling it..

I have a go pro mounted on my bike with a HogTag collar mount. I also purchased a battery eliminator from them as well. It has a usb on a wire that I plug into the battery tender with the HD adapter dongle. I never have to worry about a dead battery. I think they even give a CVOHarley discount. I couldn't be happier with the setup and people ask about it all the time.

Thanks for all the advice and awesome videos.  I was told that you could not get a decent video using the handle bar mount but the two videos with the bar mounts were perfect.  Is it worth getting the Hog Tag Collar package that eliminates the use of the batteries?  If that worked out well I cold video a lot more and use the batteries for family events.  I have allot of info but now I don't know about the battery eliminator from Hog Tag, any thoughts about going this way?

I don't know anything about the Hog Tag Collar...I pick and choose what I film....meaning most of the raw footage is anywhere to 20 seconds to 90 seconds. And try to make sense of 2 hours of raw  film into a 2 to 6 minute video trying to tell a story of my ride.......By looking at the video short cuts above you can see how I put the videos together....some people just turn the camera on and film for 5 to 20 mins or longer and add music to it.....But I move the camera around the bike and use the selfie stick.....I have three batteries, 1 in the camera and 2 extra ones....When I stop  I use the Battery tender charger (sae to usb) to keep the batteries charged or put the extra gopro battery in the saddle bag and charge the gopro  battery that way also using the battery tender charger...But everyone is diff how they film and how they are going to use the gopro...

I should also add...I have the Smart Remote for the Gorpro.....Its worth every penny to have...You can put the gopro in standby mode and with a click of the remote start filming..The gopro battery will last a lot longer in standby..There is a chart somewhere on the gopro site showing how long you can get with the battery in standby....I think its 6 hours...I can go easy all day riding and use just two batteries using the remote and standby on the camera....
