Idle issues on a 2007 Deuce
« on: August 12, 2015, 10:00:14 PM »

I just got back from my Sturgis trip and my completely stock 2007 Deuce started acting up on Monday. The idle dropped from 900 RPM to about 700 RPM on two occasions and then was fine the rest of the day.

Yesterday on our last ride before loading up to come home, the idle went up to 3200 RPM and after 20 minutes of rural riding. I was able to get it to drop back to the normal 900 RPM by loading it up against the brakes and blipping the throttle at the same time. It ran perfect back to the campground and it is normal again tonight when I unloaded it

Does anyone on the site have any ideas as to what the problem may be? I checked earlier threads and I cannot find a similar issue to mine.

The bike is all stock with 17,000 miles on it and has had no mechanical work done to it other than regular pm service since I purchased it new.

Thanks in advance for any help from CVO members.

No clue if this will help, but my 2005 Heritage had a somewhat similar issue and mine would either idle high or not at all and the speedo would quit working. After having the local "parts changer" dealer go through just about every part in the bike it turned out it was the turn signal/security module (TSSM). I couldn't believe it.

You MAY have a leaking manifold gasket. If you know where the manifold enters the head, spray a little WD-40 around the area and see if the idle goes up. If so the manifold could be loose or the gasket needs replacing.

I hope it isn't the TSSM but it could be....it's difficult without seeing the bike firsthand.

Replace the Idle Air Control unit on top of the throttlebody.

My bet is the IAC playing up as well, spray carby cleaner up into it and flush the crud out, see if that helps, it may well need replacing but often a good clean out will sort it. See how ya go.

I appreciate the excellent tips on my idling issues.

I have sprayed the intake manifold and that was not the problem.

I sprayed the IAC and the bike appears to be idling correctly since the cleaning. I did get some black residue out of the port and I hope this addresses the problem. I test drove the bike and it appears to be working fine.

Thanks for all the help.
