Fairing brass thread inserts....problem
« on: August 14, 2015, 11:39:53 AM »

I have a 2012 FLHXSE and have taken my winshield trim off to replace the windshield, apon replacing the trim screws the far left end screw would not tighten up, after closer inspection it appears that the brass threaded insert is turning inside the mounting holes for the inserts, now I know I need to remove the outer fairing to have excess to repair it, my question is:

Has anybody had this problem before? what's the best fix for this? I know I could probably super glue it but Iam nort sure I want to go with that. what do you guys recommend?

Your input appreciated.

I've had that problem on my 05 I just used a good 2 part epoxy on them be careful with getting it in the threads though and never had anymore trouble from them

Bob,

We're these not well nuts on the '12s?  If so,  just replace.   If not, the new bikes still have the problem and it's common.  My recent experience: 2015 RGU:  I'm Blue...  So Blue...   An epoxy repair was tried but did not hold probably because the HD mechanic used an impact wrench to spin the brass and polished the seat too much to hold.

I think an industrial epoxy would be a better bet for you than super glue.  It will take the vibration over time.  Let it dry overnight before you try to thread and make sure the threads are clean and not damaged.  Good luck.

The insert part number is 16585-96, and it is threaded on the inside and the outside.  If the inner threads for the windshield screws are damaged, you can remove the insert and install a new one.  See the attached pdf for the instructions.  If the plastic of the inner fairing is broken where the insert screws into it, then you may have to replace the broken part or do a different kind of repair.

Not sure what you mean by well nuts, but these are brass threaded female inserts that hold the windshield in and tighten the top of the fairing, one came out of the port hole. I will go to the dealer and talk to them about it in the morning and get some good epoxy 2 part. I am also going to get some good Torx screwdrivers.

Thanks Grc

Hey, Bob, if you have a tap and die set, you ought to run a tap thru the nut before you glue it in place, and also run a die on the bolts, just to clean them up.  I'd do it for all the nuts.
Did that with my rig and it made a huge difference in how easily those bolts screwed in or out.
Don't know if they're the same thread size/pitch as ours on the RG's, but that's easy enough to verify.

On the earlier bikes the bottom 4 inserts on the batwing were threaded into the outer fairing, the top 3 for pinching the windshield were knurled and pressed into place. You could
get the threaded type at the dealer and tap the inner fairing to insert them. I had to do this on 3 different bikes so far.

I used a two part JB weld made specifically for plastic back on a 2006. Held several years till sold bike. Wal mart sells it. Mix, dab part in it. put in hole, place clamp over to hold in. wait day. fixed.

Thanks everybody, problem fixed, I didn't even have to remove the fairing, the brass insert came out with the screw in it so I removed the screw from the insert checked the threads then I applied some masking tape around the hole in the fairing, blew it out with some air and applied 3 drops of super glue and slid it back in the port hole, waited 30 minutes and the screw tighten the fairing down...problem solved.

Thanks again
