Can this be repaired with a plug?
« on: August 15, 2015, 02:00:21 PM »

Picked this up to day. I don't know if it can be repaired with a plug or not? I don't want to be stuck with a new tire if it can be plugged. I know when there is side wall damage a new tier is required but not sure on nails in the tread. If you can plug this kind of flat I'll just get a repair kit and do it myself
I haven't called my breakdown service as yet I was hoping for some input first, Can it be repaired?, will it need replacing? If it can be repaired, CAN a plug be used or dose a patch have to be put on the inside?

You only have 2 wheels.  Have seen plugs blow out, not fun.  If this was my tire I would :

1. remove the wheel & replace the tire

or

2. plug the tire & take it straight in for tire replacement.

I'm with Iski, don't risk it not worth it.  Never trusted plugs anyway but that looks like it would take a big one.

it is a shame after 400 miles but could be much, much worse if you plug and something happens.

Our local car tire guys have went away from plugs due to liability if one comes out and that is on a vehicle with 4 wheels.  They do what they call a boot which means they take the tire off the wheel and vulcanize a patch on the inside of the tire.  Not sure they would do it to a motorcycle. If they did then I would probably put a tube in it too.

I'm hearing you guys and what your saying but I thought plugs/inside patch/boot were alright for tire repairs :nixweiss: You spend x amount on rubber have it installed one mile down the road you pick up a nail ya have to go back and fork out x amount again

Could it be patched probably so, in my case Murphy chases me around so much so I have to think my picture is under Murphy's Law stating testing daily..  Will it hold not a risk I will or would take.

I guess it depends on the value you put on your life.   Enough chit happens out on the road without pressing it over a nominal cost.  To me this just isn't one of those situations worth gambling on.

One more vote for replacing the tire... the price of a tire is a lot cheaper than having a plug malfunction (chit the bed) and you crash. Plugs IMO are for temporary use... IE: getting you off the side of the road to a place where you can get the tire replaced.

As much as it sucks, buy a new tire.
