Now what do I do?
« on: August 16, 2015, 12:52:18 PM »

I have a 2014 SE Limited. It was a bone stock demo. I got a very good deal on it. I have had a few problems with it and we all know of all of the recalls they have had. Well I was heading for Sturgis when the bike just quit running. Lucky I was not to far from home, so I headed back to the house on a friends bike to get the truck and trailer. I took it to Frederick Harley Davidson and they took it right in. Turns out it had a bad ECM. They also had trouble getting a new ECM to marry to the bike. After three ECM's they finally got one to marry. They told me that they thought the problem was fixed but wanted to run it on the Dyno and do a full tune instead of a smart tune. I was OK with that. I had just put on a new air cleaner and a D&D Fat Kat exhaust. The bike had been smart tuned 5 days prior so I also got a new SEPRT. Well I have never seen numbers like I got. I was asked what cams were in the bike. The bike is BONE STOCK inside. The tuner who was the tuner for the drag race bikes Frederick ran told me he did not fudge the numbers but had never seen good numbers like this bike put out. I have a dyno sheet and need to scan it. But I may need someone to resize it so it can be posted. The bike a 2014 110 ci wet head pulled 112.77 HP and 123.21 TQ numbers.

Now the problem. I have everything I need to make this motor bullet proof including a S&S crank assembly set up for the Timken, 4.060 SE pistons, fueling pump, plate and lifters, TD24 cams, 58mm TB with 5.3 injectors. I was going to send the heads out to be done. But with numbers like I have I don't know that it would be worth the little extra gain I will get by doing all of the engine work. I now have 20,600 miles on the bike. I do want to change the lifters and pushrods very soon. So do I go into the motor or just run it. It pulls very good and I am happy with the way it runs. I'm thinkin just leave it alone for a couple of years and see if in fact I keep it.

OK so lets hear it.

Just my .02 but I feel like "if it ain't broke don't fix it." and just enjoy a good running bike. The more you work on it and try it squeak out another ounce of performance you may affect the reliability.

Mike,
If you email/text me the dynosheet I can resize it for you np.   The sanity part I your looking for might come in the form of a dyno run somewhere else to validate the numbers.   As your aware day to day you can expect 1-2 difference if its in the same area and similar conditions.   Could just be a generous dyno by nature.  My expectation is your gonna lose about 10% and then the numbers are perfectly in line.

IMHO;
Change out the stock valve springs for some beehive springs (the lifters will love you for it)

When I asked, everybody recommended S&S Premium Lifters... and SE Adjustable Push Rods...

Or if you leave it all stock and just replace the lifters... With #s like you have, that's what I'd do

Harry I understand completely. This guy built and tuned the engines for their race program. He does not sweeten the pot. He did everything but call me a liar and swears I have changed the cams. I will get it to you tomorrow. I need your e mail addie or even better yet your cell number. I do have a pic on my phone and can text it to you. It was tuned in a warm humid climate ambient. Not sure what it was like inside the room. The bike pulls like no 110 I have ever owned before. On my trip out west I never had to down shift to pass or climb a steep hill. I do know last night on the way home it was in the 60's and the bike was running like it never did before. I think by seat of the pants the numbers are perfectly inline.  I'm thinkin the 2 into 1 exhaust and the increased size of the air cleaner plus the added compression of the wet head is what caused the numbers to be so high. I have not seen anyone who has tuned their bike with a new exhaust change to a new oversize air cleaner. I may be very wrong, Lord knows it wouldn't be the first time.

Gary this is a very good way to look at it. I already have all of the parts and they are paid for. Now all I need to do is pay for some machine work and put it back together. It will be very reliable as I won't really be going for numbers. Soooooo I may just take on this winter project and then pay for a retune!!!!!

Mike,

Here you go, if you get a chance and can rescan it or take another photo, just shoot it to me as this one is kind of blurry.

Dyno numbers mean absolutely nothing. My bike has dyno'd 95/115 on one dyno, and 115/125 on another. Same mods, no changes. I figure I must be somewhere in between. Apparently number vary wildly from one dyno to another.

IMO, dyno numbers only have value as a before and after on the same dyno, to gauge how a build or mods improved the same bike.

Like the guys say, if your happy, leave it alone.

if youve got the parts to "bullit proof" the motor, ide just do that if your happy with the performance.i defanatly wouldn't wait till the springs take the lifters out,the lower end scissors and wrecks the oil pump, cam plate, ect or the inner bearings go south.

Reminds me of the old Fram advertisements in a way.  You can spend the money now, or wait and possibly spend it later for repairs.  Putting a pile of money into the bike ahead of time might save you from a an inconvenient breakdown somewhere, but there again maybe not.  What if you decide to trade it in next year instead of keeping it for many years?

To me it the decision would strictly hinge on how much a breakdown would bother me.  And don't forget, even if you replace most of the engine with better components, those aren't the only things that disable Harleys these day.  Your own experience with the electrical system is an example.

Jerry you are correct. I am always looking for your words of wisdom. I think this winter it is coming apart. For me it is not so much about the power, it is now about reliability!!!

They are calling for a harsh winter here in the Mid Atlantic. So it will give something to do this winter.
