Open fairing
« on: January 19, 2007, 10:40:28 AM »

I want to install the Bluetooth inside my fairing.  :-?
How difficult is it to "open" the fairing on my Jester?
Anyone has the description on how to do it?

I am scanning a photo to show the locataion of the screws. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Be sure and put two old socks over the Aux lights, and something to cover the front fender (I use an old pillow case), to keep from scratching either the fender or the fairing "just in case".  Definitely do the Aux lights...socks work great!!!

Also, be sure to stuff rags in the area below screw numbers 6 & 7.  They are a little difficult to get to and if you should drop one it can be a bear to retreive.  Wonder how I learned this.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Been there done that. :( Also helps to have one of those telescopic magnets handy for retrieving those screws when they fall.

I lost one into that dark hole and never did get it out. Went to the dealership and bought a replacement. Tried everything. The rag idea is a great one I wish I'd have known about earlier.

;)  Another thing that helps, get a nut driver with a magnetic bit holder and a torx bit.  As long as it's a strong enough magnet, you shouldn't drop the screw.

When you reinstall the outer fairing don't overtighten the T27 screws.  Just get them good an snug, especially those three that hold the windshield.

Solve that problem forever Brian.  Also make reinstallation easier and never worry again about cross threading one of those frakking little inserts.  Just put a little piece of all thread in each of the lower holes and then put nuts on them.  That and the socks are the two best fairing tricks I ever shared with anyone.

I took 2Lane's advice last summer about the 2 studs in the lower fairing holes with nuts in place of the screws that are easily dropped and even worse-cross threaded.  The lower screws will start cross threaded so easy it's not funny. The only downside to the studs is that they can catch on the cables/wires on removal and install of the fairing.  Removing the fairing is not hard/just nerve racking for at least me.  The fairing is just a fragile and cheap design.

That's something you do have to get used to feeling for Bob.  Absolutely correct.  Not so much of an issue during removal.  But during install it's easy to find that the headlight harness has got trapped below the left stud.

Just have to remember to feel for it though.  But the gain is never having to try to line up those silly screws down below again and no worry about getting the started.  The studs are easy to get to.  The nuts stay inside the sockets so you don't drop anything.  It's not that it's that hard the other way.  This is just easier (at least it is to me).  And if you ever wreck an insert in the fairing with a cross threaded screw it is suddenly way easier.
