How to Remove the Front of the Fairing on a Road Glide
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:26:27 PM »

I don't know of any nuances that may be different on a CVO, just beware that this vid was done for a RGC.  But it's a good place to start.
I liked the video Ryan Urlacher put together until the guy scraped the fairing on the (unprotected) front fender as the fairing came off.  He made it all the way through the process and then when he pulled the fairing off, he got careless.  Not worth watching for that alone, unless you need a refresher on putting a thick towel on your painted surfaces.

This one's better:

That's a good start.

A couple things I'll add from my own experience doing this.

1. We have the chrome windshield trim on our bikes. I put painter's tape on the outer when removing those windshield screws just to keep them from scratching the fairing because they will slip down once you have one screw out and the other one loose.

2. Put two of the windshield screws back in loosely after you remove the vent to hold that fairing on while you remove the rest of them. Stand in front of the bike then and remove those screws once all the others are out.

3. You can pop those speaker grills out from the inside using your fingers instead of using a pick and possibly scratching your painted inner fairing.

Good stuff, Mike.  Painter's tape is handy stuff to have around!
I like #2 idea also!
Thanks for adding on!

Removal, for me, isn't too hard. It's putting it back on that makes me say swear words.  I've gotten to the point that I remove the headlights and "watch" the hooks go together. Then I pop the headlights back in.  Much smoother and consistent.

OP was talking about the latest generation of Sharks. I did the same thing you do when I had my '11 if I didn't hit those hooks on the first or second try. Taping all those wires back out of the way on your style really makes hitting those hooks much easier.

Fairing removal and insulation is so much easier on the 15 RG when compared to the 13 and older.

When I installed vent screens on mine and my wife's 15 road glides it to less time to take fairing front off and back on both bikes than it did to just remove and install the fairing front on my 12 road glide.  Had lots of practice on the old style, and the 15's it was the first time.
