I got the 124 Lemon
« on: September 02, 2015, 12:25:39 AM »

With my oil temp high early this summer 295 degrees ,on another thread earlier, had the bike retuned and left for a week trip, stopped to get a oil leak fixed on the external oil lines which I am not a big fan of. First time I get caught in  stop and go traffic with my bike since engine swap it hits 305 degrees starts pushing blue smoke out the pipes and I mean a lot of blue !!!! called the dealer, let the bike cool, and turned around and went back , bike was still smoking when I got back, oil was black ,dumped it out and put in syn 60 wt for the first time . We made our trip hitting temps of 275 -280 but I could smell burning oil on decel on our trip, used about 1/2 to 3/4 of a liter of oil on our trip , about 1500 miles . Not very happy with my bike at all ,now only 3000 miles on this motor and have to rebuild it already  >:(   What could be wrong causing my heat issues ? All ready had the cam plate bushing issues so is something else not put together right !!!!  Monday or Friday motor ?  :nixweiss:

I had the same problem on my 2012 SESG before and it was the crankshaft. Hopefully the dealer can figure it out for you.

Can you give us more info on your 124"?  when was it installed and how did it run after the install?  Was the tune acceptable?  I have a 124 with the external lines and I rarely get the bike over 225 degrees.  I have heard of others that own a crate 124 and saw no benefit to any oil coolers on the market.  Something is not right.  Hope you get it straightened out and running right.

Yes it is a 124 LC crate motor . I had it installed last summer rode it 750 miles and started to develop a tic which was getting louder ,found out that was the cam plate bushing were over machined and that took the rest of the summer to get parts and repair . It ran warm 275 ish but took that just as a new tight motor . Got my bike back in October so riding season is over here . Do to work never got first ride in till June this year an it hit 294 not stop and go and not hot only about 80% ,took it back to dealer to check tune .Ran bike another 750 miles not stop and go still hitting 280-290 . Dumped out non syn and put in syn 60 wt temps dropped to 275-280 on this trip 1500 miles . Now my years warranty is up with no miles on this motor and something is not right !!!!!!!

Does this bike have an oil cooler? I have had several bikes with a Thermostat that was not working or opening and the motor oil would get hot. Easy to test.

Just curious here! When you talk about a dealer, are you referring to an S&S dealer or a HD dealer?
Has anyone checked to make sure the oil lines are correctly installed? Is the engine sumping?
Sumping could cause excessive heat buildup.
This crate engine, does it have the S&S exclusive gear type oil pump or is it the HD georotor type.
What type of tuner is on the bike? Who tuned it?
A LC style motor properly tuned for a reasonable AFR, and not sumping, should run around 200 degrees, even on hot days.
There may be a couple of HD dealers out there that could tune this 124, but I've never seen one I would trust to tune a bicycle.
My carbed T124HC engine has never ran above 195 degrees on the highway, regardless of ambient temps (well over 100 degrees). I did see it get up to 235 one day on the bridge at the Sioux, sitting in traffic for almost 2hrs. It takes 20-30 miles at highway speeds to get oil temps to 190 on 90 degree days.
You need to find a competent tuner, and someone who understands sumping and the S&S systems.

It is a S&S dealer  I am assuming they know what they are doing . It was a create motor so it should be and S&S oil pump. It has a TTS tuner . It was tuned by a reputable tuner which I am not going to mention any names at this point . Not sticking up for these guys just want all the facts first.

There is something wrong,  twinotter covered most of what I was hinting at.  I have the new 124HC crate motor with the 640 cams with the 66mm throttle body and the temps run way lower than yours.  I just had it tuned with a TTS yesterday because it was running rich so it may get a bit warmer but I still stay around 225.  I have not had much luck working with the S&S Technical Support group.  I needed gaskets and spacers that were needed to stop an intake leak.  After 3 tries they still got it wrong,  made my own back-plate gasket because I was out of time.  There are some knowledgeable vendors on this site.  I know they helped me out when I needed something to happen at S&S last spring.   Sometimes just finding the right person can make a world of difference,  hope you find what you need, I understand your frustration.

Seems like your S&S Dealer should make it right...

S&S dealer, Harley dealer, just because they have the shingle doesn't mean they know. I've seen dealers that I wouldn't let put an axle in a wheel barrow,,,,,,  ::)
