I just put in a 124 HC a couple of months ago and 3500 miles and it also runs much cooler than yours though it will hit 300 climbing a long slow grade in the recent heat we have had in So Cal. Last Sunday it cooled down and it never ran above 250 even flogging it hard up Ortega Highway. Taking the freeway back it ran around 220 at 80 mph. Something definitely wrong with your setup.

Are we talking oil temps or cylinder head temps?

The other question that comes to mind is what temps are being logged. If this is cylinder heads temps, that's a whole different ball game than oil temps. Heads temps from a electronic temp sensor could easily be faulty. A lean tune could make the heads run hotter than normal, but 250 to 300 degrees is probably considered normal.
If its actual oil temps, have you verified the gauge is accurate? I use a full mechanical gauge. I simply don't trust electronic gauges. Whats the mileage like? If its really low, it could be sumping making the engine work far harder than it should. IMO the T124 from S&S in either LC or HC versions are one of the sweetest combos out there. Good luck finding the cure!  Buffalo

You could call S&S and send it back for rebuild or preferably replacement. That would be my 1st choice.

I recently took apart a crate S&S 124 for head work.  Might of had 6000 miles on it.  The cylinders were scared from dirty instal.  Looked like the engine sat on the shelf long enough to form rust patch's in the cylinders.  Rings faces were chipped as well.  The rear head gasket was leaking into the stud holes but not to the atmoshere.  This filled the stud holes and cooked the oil that was in there.  S&S sent new pistons and rings and paid for the bore job.

My point is.  Just because it says S&S doesn't mean it is perfect.  Good luck.

The vertical marks(actual scaring??) looks as though a very close fit piston.
What was the piston skirt/cylinder wall dimension?

Update ::: I am now told that my excessive heat build up from S&S is from running V&H monster ovals with there S&S header ,to much restriction . Is this possible ? Can some of you builders please chime in on this  :nixweiss:

Not a Builder, but it sounds a little far fetched to me...
