Kind of cycle related,
Skin Cancer over exposer to the sun, mine not on a bike but neither the less, way to much
which finally has been catching up with me.
Had a spot on my neck and one, about the size of a Quarter right over my heart, formed in some old scar tissue
from other surgeries I've had
so the one on over the heart turned out to be Basel Cell Carcinoma, most common

now I've been on a surgical table more than I ever want to think about so no big deal,
they just numb the area and get after it with the post hole digger!, took about 20 minutes a quick patch
then "go in there and sit down, we will be back to get you in about a hour"

while they run the test on what they took to see if it was enough,
I was going to make the joke about "don't do to deep or we all will be in trouble"

so a hour later they came to get me,
and said "good news, we got it all"

"so lets go back in, it's going to take about a hour to stitch you up???!

so at this point when I was sitting on the end of the table and she pulled the temp bandage off I took a look
and went DAMN!!

THERE WAS the old ticker, pumping away,
they had taken a perfect 1 1/2 diameter by about a quarter inch deep chunk out of me! and you could see
the ole heart pumping away,
I need to lay down now!
and a hour later after a hole lot of pulling and tugging I had a new 5" scar right over the heart!

I'm wearing a hat from now on, thank god that wasn't my nose like I've seen some other have done!

I'm real glad for you that they got it all.

I went through the similiar things with my skin doctor. 

Her "commercial" is that all of us who have lived in the sun on our bikes with little or no sun protection over many years are now paying the price.

With each visit, my skin doctor rolls in the big welding tank bottles of nitrous and freezes my head, face and several newly found areas on my body that seem to continually pop up.

She's real quick with the scaple too.  I'm thinking she would be a expert sushi chef.

Remember it's SPF 50 for those who haven't experienced a skin doctor visit.....yet.

What a story and glad they got it. I haven't had challenges like that.  I have always been in the sun and I do take more care now to avoid sun burns. I have to protect my head, the natural protection has all fallen to my back and shoulders (what the h..ll).

I'm 63,
never worried about it, really did some stupid things in the sun and until
the last couple of years I've seen more issues that warranted going to the doc

and after seeing my landlord who is a fish-a-holic have half his nose cut off
and several "older" gentlemen this trip in to the doc office have huge spots taken off the top of their  heads
yes,
I use a sun screen of 120 or more, this summer I had to use a frog towel around the neck when I rode
because it was so un-comfortable on other spots

oh well,
I'm not hiding!

I have two other 6" scars for chemo catheter implants over my heart, in "cross bone" formation also so I asked the "seamstress"
if she could make the new scar look like a "skull"
she was not amused!

 Brombee glad it turned out ok.  I have had two Squamis cell carcinomas removed and I know it is not fun.  They took a chunk the size of a golf ball out of my wrist on one of them.   I now have another on the back of my hand and they will have to go in around the  tendons in a couple of weeks.  I am glad it is not where yours was.   Just keep going back regularly and let them do there thing.  It is a PITA but a lot better than the other outcome.

I too have had the scalpel used on my forehead and back to remove the ol skin cancer. Not fun but it is the price you pay for too much sun when young. Thank goodness they got them on the first pass because they would have had to catch me to cut some more. I now ware SPF 50 and cover up the noggin and arms.

I didn't dare show this to my wife.  She'd lose it.  She lost her husband of 20+ years to cancer and then had to stand there and watch him leave this earth. 

I'm glad all you have is a hole left where that ugly disease was.  You have much to be thankful for.  So much!  I wish you all the best and plenty of shade along your way!

And as an aside...have you ever thought of writing?  You have a way and a skill with your thoughts that is pretty interesting to read and follow along with.

They thru a bandage on it and I didn't realize the extent of it until the next morning. Man was I shocked when I looked in the mirror. I didn't need any more ugly, and it took some time to heal. Well last year during my semi annual checkup they took a biopsy of a small spot on my back and it came back positive. I had to endure some other treatments to ensure it didn't spread. I've since then been given all clear on my last two checkups. I went through a gambit of emotions throughout this last stint. If I knew I was gonna make it this long I'd taken much better care of myself.

To all the folks out there please have any different mole or spot on yer body checked as early as you can.

 I would add that you schedule a annual visit to the skin doctor of your choice.  Those of us who are seniors have lived in the sun for many, many years and, each visit to the doctor brings surprises in the form of hopefully pre cancerous moles and other issues. 

I doubt that many here are aware but many skin cancers are deadly and aggressive.

So, like that other thing we guys don't like to do (prostate exams) please go get checked. It doesn't take long in either case and then you're good to go for at least another year.

man I wanted to go for my weekend ride but
it had only been a week and my arm pit even feels bruised,
still can't left my left arm over my head!
but I found ways to stay busy in the man cave.

found myself digging thru all of the bathroom cabinets, looking for sun screen
never used it but I am now!

the wife said to make sure all knew I really did not get to see the "actual heart"!
because that would of been impossible with rib cage and all!

"yes dear, next time I'll let you look into the hole, and tell me that pumping action does not warrant, stretching the facts a little"
