2004 is hemi head which was 95 cc 1.900 with 1.625 exhaust
2012 is more of a bathtub, avg about 85 cc head I believe 1.800 intake a 1.565 or 1.570 exhaust.

Big difference in the heads.
The oil pumps are different, cam tensioners different, cam plates. 253 cams in 2004
dick head rods in later models, full compliment rods in the 2004
acceptable run out on the 04 is .003, on the 2012 its .012 hahaha (not acceptable to me)

auto compression releases in 2012
No closed loop, no fly by wire, no lambda sensors, no 02 sensors in 04

Apples to apples if you put in 570 S&S in both bikes the 2004 will kick the 2012's butt.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the earlier '04-'06 CVO 103 engines were stroked too. I don't think the current crop of 103s are stroked.

yes they are both stroked.   the 88's or 1450 cc motors were not.   the 1690 is a stroked motor from HD

And I'm just taking a wild guess here but I believe Harry would agree with me that the 04 motor is a much better motor in stock form.  :2vrolijk_21:

2004 cvo motor might have a 203 cam stock. Not positive on that

The 2012 has possibly the worst cam a stock Harley ever had with negative or no overlap

No the 2004 103 had SE253 cams. It was one hell of a motor.

Well, so far.....of those that's posted that owned an 04 it's unanimous.  Ya think we could get the MoCo to go back to that motor? :nixweiss:   Naw.....that thing was to reliable and therefore unprofitable.

Flywheels on the crank are much better than the new offerings. I have never seen one with more than .003 run-out on the cam side.

I would prefer the 02 crank to any of the newer ones along with the timken that comes with it.  My 05 had the crank go was .052.
