01 serg conversion to carb
« on: September 11, 2015, 05:25:42 PM »

ive purchased a htcc head and piston combo new for real cheap, im going to run a 251 cam as its what in this kit ive purchased, id like to get rid of the fuel injection and go back to carb,
any siggestions? id like not to hack the harness too badly or at all,
ive read about thunder heart stand alone ignitions, and carbs, what carb would i run? 42 seems small as thats what im running on my evo, but have read alot of 42 being used on tc

Don't get discouraged SB  :nervous: a lot of the regulars on the site are either travelling to, or preparing for the Get Together in North Carolina, I'm sure someone will chime in soon  :drink:

Go over to:

www.harleytechtalk.org

They have entire threads on the subject of M&M to carb conversion including a complete list of the parts, and part numbers. Furthermore, at least half a dozen members have done it and can give you guidance and direction.

Good luck!

This is an easy conversion if you decide to pursue it.  I'd not consider trying to hack the original harness though.  Far easier just to swap the engine harness.  Just remove the original fuel injection harness (has a single connector that attaches it to the main harness) and replace it with the ignition harness for a carb'd bike.  Last conversion I did a couple years ago I was lucky enough to score a good used ignition harness on eBay for $45.

The original carb'd ignition harness I think are now obsolete from Harley.  The aftermarket has stepped up though.  Just do an eBay search for "Harley 32435" and you'll find it.  NAMZ harness if I remember correctly.  The other aftermarket parts you'll have to source will come from Pingel.  They offer a plug to seal the second hole in the gas tank you'll no longer be using.  Harley used to offer this also but it too is now obsolete.

The rest is just a parts swap.  Remove the fuel disconnect fitting and internals lines from the gas tank and as much of the stock pump and filter assembly as you want to get out of the way then bolt the remaining original parts back down to the gas tank.  Swap the injection harness for the carb'd bike harness.  Swap the original ECM mounts and other bits under that side cover for the carb'd bike variants.  Use whatever aftermarket ignition system you choose (there are several that will connect and work well) and swap the M&M throttle body for the intake and carb of your choice.   There are carb options that will let you keep the cruise control.

This is an easy Saturday job if you've got all the parts in hand to begin with.  If you want to make your life easier check out the exploded parts diagrams to compare the fuel injected and carb'd bikes.

32435-00 ign harness  $168.49 retail @ your local Harley dealer. It's still available. FI coil will work fine, as will the throttle cables. You'll need to use a PINGLE PETCOCK with the Pingle adaptors.
Re-install the fuel pump back in the tank after removing the fuel lines and filter. The pump helps dampen the gas gauge.

This was the best thing I did to my 01. I should have done it sooner.

I tried to get that harness and dealer told me no longer ava.. However I do a lot of the conversion's.. S&S carb kit, a pingel fuel valve and conversion nut and I run the thunder heart module it is  a very simple 5 wire hook and comes with a coil and and you can program the curve. You will need a module anyway. This will allow a extremely simple fast install . The only item that you will need to alter is the check eng light and you can clip the wire as it no longer does anything as the ECM is no longer used. These take maybe 3-4 hours to install .

FWIF, I got the 32435-00 harness 2 months ago from Treasure Coast HD. Chester's  HD called me for the part # cause they were doing a conversion last week(Their parts people aren't to sharp), anyway they got the harness, and told me their customer was on the road, when I stopped by 9/11 for their 2016 new bike announcement party.

I just checked my HD partsmart list. It shows active.  ;)

That's good info.  A couple of years ago two different dealerships told me obsolete last time I needed one.  So either they were both FoS or the part number was reactivated.  Either way it's a good one to still have available.  No I just wonder if the NAMZ version from the aftermarket is less expensive?
