If your wife like the stock exhaust I probably would lean towards the 1.75 core. Steve knew almost exactly what my numbers would end up at, he's done it with our bikes enough times... I'd just ask him. I'd bet whatever you give up won't be much and keeping the wife happy would probably trump the difference. ;)

Sounds like a good plan of attack.

I'd email your first "tuner" your dyno sheets. Of course, he would probably say all the improvement was due to the fact you ditched your V&H cans.

Okay folks... here's the scoop.

First of all, a huge thank you to Steve out at Fullsac. This man knows his stuff, he came highly recommended by several people on the forum and I should have listened and just bit the bullet and rode to Lake Havasu in the first place. Note to self: It's getting on the end of summer and it's getting cold in the desert at night.  :nervous: Other than a chilly zone or two a nice 225 miles early morning and later afternoon return ride. Note #2: The spray on sunblock, don't get it anywhere near your eyes so that a drop of sweat might get some in that eye...  :'( It really stings and makes riding about as close to impossible as one might imagine.

On to the tune... To clear up any possible variances in Dynos, look at my first post and you'll see the other guy sent me out the door at 84/97. Steve's ran a baseline pull when I got to his shop and what do you know? Yep, 84/97 so we can agree that we are comparing apples and apples. Let's let the dyno sheet do the talking then I'll comment further. 002 is of course the baseline run and 017 and 018 are what we ended up with.

Behold:

Wow. Now to be totally fair we swapped the Monster Ovals for his 2.0 power cores which he said gained a couple pounds of twist while HP would probably be similar. I think we could say then the numbers would have been around 95-108ish which probably not coincidentally is what Harry got from his tune with Monster Rounds and an SEPST and again very similar to what my first "tuner" had to work with.

So, whattaya think?  :bananarock:

That's  more like it, great results.

That is an excellent example to show all the folks who think a $299 add-on box with a canned map from an exhaust company is all they need.  It's also a good example of why the most important part of the entire process is finding a really good professional tuner to do the tune, versus whoever was available at the local Harley shop.

Now forget the numbers and tell everyone how it runs, from idle to cruise to WOT, compared to stock and then to that so-called "tune" you got previously.

Good points all of them Jerry. The bike runs fantastic... Comparing it to stock is difficult because it's been a few months since I rode it stock and there have been a few changes along the way. I wish I could have my bike in all five configurations parked next to each other and ride them all within a half hour. Now comparing it to the other "tune" is easier and it's just better in all aspects of course.

Sound messes with my head, when the bike is stock you get an idea of sound being produced and the resulting response. When I added the Monster Ovals in stock configuration I loved the sound, but you get noise that doesn't necessarily equate to performance numbers although my brain tells me if it sounds faster it must be faster which of course may or may not be the case, hence the dyno. After the "tune" from the other guy it was a bit louder still with the new DX headpipe and no cat, but on the ride home it just felt like the old Harley Davidson joke "HD, turning fuel into noise without the unwanted side effects of horsepower" and his dyno sheet showed exactly that, I had some weak numbers even for stock and at that point I've dumped about $1,600 into mods. There's no trick to making the bike loud and run like crap, I could have done that for free.

So right now I have a bike that runs to it's potential, it idles nice, it rolls on from a stop powerfully and if you gun it, it will really stretch your arms compared to the stock bike. At cruise, very nice, good power and smooth acceleration in passing situations. I haven't had a chance to go get aggressive on the mountain twisties, I might get some time to do that today or tomorrow and I'll report back. I'm a bit undecided on the exhaust note from the 2.0 cores, but I want to wait until I put the packing back in to make that decision. I was truly in love with the Monster Oval sound (and I love how they look), so who knows... if it means giving up a couple split hairs I may have Steve send me a map I try it with those.

It's all a process we know well, as long as it's moving in the right direction be it looks, sound, or performance, then it's all good. When you take a step backwards it hurts the heart and the wallet, when we take a step forward like yesterday it makes us happy and the money seems well spent.

Glad this worked out for you, Lance!  As you can see, the numbers are right on what you would get from the Fullsac website.    :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Greg, and yes I was thrilled with that. You know, I see someone posting dyno sheets on their site and I usually take things with a grain of salt... kind of thinking that's a "best case" scenario and kind of expecting the "well every bike is different" line when the numbers didn't line up. Not so with Steve that's for sure, the man told me the numbers he consistently gets from this bike and he nailed it. No excuses, just worked in that booth until he had it and watching through the window I was grinning ear to ear as every half hour or so he'd do another couple pulls and the chart would show the improvements. tq 97, then 102, then 106, 110, finally at 113.

No hype, no BS, the man just did it. Bottom line is I just wanted the bike to run to it's potential without opening the motor and I'm convinced we did that.

Glad to be here!  8)

Without you good folks I probably would not have gone to Steve's shop, but the ringing endorsements from guys with bikes like ours sealed the deal and I'm glad I made the ride. The best thing is I wouldn't hesitate to do it again, if I change anything on my ride that requires dyno work to run at it's potential then I'm just going to set out in the early hours and go get it done.

Just an update on the 2.0 power cores, I had Steve and his crew leave the packing out and the sound as I mentioned was a little too "racy" (my best description) and a touch too much volume for my tastes in a touring bike. Don't get me wrong, it sounded like a well tuned and well oiled machine like it was ready to set out and kick some butt and if that's the sound you're after then give it a shot and I think you'll be pleased. Today I received my previous mufflers and the packing by UPS so I installed the packing and his screens using 13.5" of the original material as instructed. NOW it sounds great, much more what I was after and I can't wait to hit the road and really give it a good run.  :2vrolijk_21:

I initially installed just 1/2 a sheet of the original packing material on my 2.0 cores and after a four hour ride I found that my ears were ringing from the din coming through the cans.  I went ahead and installed all of the original packing and it eliminated that through the can wall din while leaving that lovely bass note that comes out of the tips.  If I wore my 3/4 or modular most of the time it wouldn't have been an issue, but with my preferred 1/2 helmet it was just a little too much noise in the soprano range.
