Premium Tour-Pak Latches
« on: September 17, 2015, 04:08:05 PM »

I'm in the process of rebuilding a fiberglass tour-pak and would like to use the "Premium Latches" to match my "Premium Hinges". Has anybody attempted this? I know the directions indicate for 2006 and up which are "plastic". A quick look has the lock hole needing relocating and who knows what else!
Thanks for any help. This forum has always been shown to produce a wealth of information when called upon!
thanks

It can be done and the holes for them should be the same but, it is extremely difficult to do by yourself because we all only have two hands. Have someone there to help you and it's easy.

Oh, I know it "can" be done. The question is what problems might I encounter if I proceed.
As I said, the hole for the lock does NOT align with the opening in the new latch. That's one concern. Are there others?
I have to believe someone has done this mod before. If not, I'll take some pics for the next sucker!!
Have you attempted this, Mr. King Glide??

I did it on my 05 a while back. As I recall on the inside I used the old latch and a new lower catch that lined it all up as it closed. I did oblong some holes in the tour pac for adjustments and the new latches hid it. Sorry I can't recall more details but it really wasn't that difficult to figure out.

Yes sir, I have done it twice, the first time by myself using both hands and my head, that's why I said get a friend to help. You do in fact need to open the alignment and screw holes 1/16" larger and I found it easier to mount the hinge on the lid first.

When I did the '08 with a TP rack on it, I did it under the garage door rails and used a couple tie-down as extra hands.

Great! It has been done before!! That's good to hear.
Although Homer 661 has me a little more confused than normal...using an old latch with a new catch? I'll figure it out. Thanks.
And Mr. King Glide...are you referring to hinges or latches? I got the lady of the house to assist with the hinges. They work nice! That was the easy part!!!
As I see it, if I have to relocate the lock body to the new position dictated by the new latch cover, would I not have to change the hook length on the lock itself? Or maybe the part that the hook hooks-to may be relocated with the new lower latch piece? Or maybe I'll leave it for a day, or....
Thanks for all your input.

you can do it, I put the hinges and latches on Sues 04 flhtcui trike, think it was the key hole had to be hogged out a little, may have upgraded the fasteners, just be careful don't scratch it. took me a while, it was a trike so it sat upright, on a bike might be helpful using a center stand or wheel chock. As you are, I was apprehensive but it come out slick.

Cool! As I see it, the key hole has to be "moved" about 1/4" up. So...how does the lock hook now reach the lower catch with that move?
I'm just a little afeared!!!
thanks for info.

I had the same fear, just telling you with hd parts it works, I do seem to recall something about the black plastic piece inside the tourpack.

I have done it. Just take your time. Make sure to hold the foam gasket down so the drill doesn't hit it. Not that tough, and they look way better.
