Lifter time
« on: September 17, 2015, 06:58:24 PM »

2013 CVO starting to clatter a tad, time to replace lifters. Got 1 slow to pump up from cold start. Except for a pipe and tune/SERT, all stock. S&S regular or premium lifters? Doing adjustables also.

I went with the S&S premium lifters and they are quiet to me but I have 65 years old F-4 Phantom tuned ears.

I went with premiums, they seem correct.

I suggest GMR, S&S Standards, or 850-1's.

HD SE Tapered P/R set at 3 turns 2 flats (if they are 32tpi).

 I think the 850-1s are being used by a bunch more people want to admit it.

I put a set in my '11 103 before heading out the Shark Week in June. They were a TON quieter than the stockers.

Of course the I traded the bike for the CVO so i can't say anything longevity.

S&S = Delhpi
GMR = Delhpi
Woods= Morel
comp cams 850=  Eaton, Morel, delphi , mexico+ else where   as they are NOT all made by same company.. SO some have great luck others well may not.. To comp its about cost on the day they re order stock

There are two types of low mass check balls ceramic and alloy .. We do not use the ceramic , in cars they had a high % of failure and the next lifter to replace it was made the way ours is.. S&S does use the ceramic and I have not seen an issue with it however. I also toy in the high performance car area as well and there I have seen it.  That was the reason we went in another direction..

Lifter failure can be caused by many things, low oil pressure, dirt, incorrect spring pressure , and then plain old poor quality parts.. ( stock falls into that box)

There are many lifters out there that work very well and S&S is not the ONLY game in town as there are but a few place to have lifters made . Buy a known quality lifter and you will be fine..    And ever manufacture in the lifter game will have a failure no two ways about that.. It will happen.. But a No BS warranty for a year takes care of that. Good luck

I'm currently running Feuling HP+ lifters with great results.  I'm not sure who actually makes them, but I'm sure it's similar to other companies out there.

I emailed Comp Cams about the 850 lifters and they told me flat out that they are USA made.  I can dig through the inbox to find out where exactly if needed.  I have yet to read of an issue from them.

Personally I've used S&S Premiums.

Gatorman in my opinion owes me a new motor.  Avoid those!

I went with GMR lifters myself.  I think that the amount of hand holding and support that you get from Steve at GMR easily made those lifters the choice for me...
Thanks Steve..
