« on: September 19, 2015, 05:35:57 PM »

Not near my bike and am wondering.....do I get a new one or a cleaning kit?

I've let the dealer look after such things ...'til now.

My 2010 is washable.  Dish soap and water, light brushing, air dry.  When it was time to replace, I went with a K&N.

Whether to clean or replace?  Depends on the condition.

Washable, not sure I'd use a brush.

Uses no oil, just clean and dri.

Agree, replace with KN at some point.

Wash gently with soap and water, DO NOT use a bristle brush, media is paper. Wash more often before it becomes black. I use a hose end shower nozzle to rinse. I also have replaced in the past with K&N eventually, but no more. I recently stumbled on a article written by a research firm in CA. A stock, they used AC Delco paper, filter filtered finer particles and passed more air volume than a K&N. They used a K&N that matched the application of the AC Delco and also used other brands such as WIX etc. Cheaper paper was better on all operational points than the K&N. One cat that K&N exceeded in was they could be used practically forever if maintained, but initial cost vs cost of replacement paper even then made paper better. FYI.

Mass Air Flow sensors don't like the K & N due to oil residue......apparently fries the MAF. (from experience years ago on Toyota 4x4s)

Fortunately for the Harley crowd H-D hasn't seen fit to try to find a way to utilize a MAF on their bikes, so the point is moot.  Much of the issue with the "tuner car" guys was attributed to going a little nuts and over oiling the filter.  I still see a lot of those aftermarket intakes with exposed K&N's being sold to this day, btw.

I prefer stainless steel filters (Exotix, Ness etc.) wash in warm soapy water, rinse, dry, no oil needed.
