Do removable baffles work for EPA testing?
« on: September 21, 2015, 06:51:07 AM »

I've got the V & H big shots staggered on the CVO Deluxe and haven't been picked up for excessive noise (yet). Reading some of the threads there seems to a lot of riders getting slugged for excessive noise.

I have since come across this...…

Has anyone had experience with this baffle passing an EPA test?

"For those of you in Australia you can get Quiet Baffle inserts for Vance & Hines on eBay for $69ea. There are three types that you can get from eBay seller peterstevensmotorcycles:

21869 - fits most Straightshots, Bigshots, Longshots, Softail Duals 21301 - fits most ShortShots Staggered, SideShots and 21899 - fits 3" slip-ons, Twin Slash 3" slip-ons.

These removable baffles will mellow your exhaust note for a classic thump, with a less edgy sound, that still showcases the strength of your motor. Reduces exhaust noise by approximately 2 -3 dB depending on conditions and bike."

EPA isn't just sound, its also emissions.

As for sound level, I have the quiets in straight shots on an EVO and its still louder than standard baffles on both Super Radius on an TC88 and Monster Ovals on a 110.    Those are both louder than stock.

They really only drop about 3dB which is good, but not great if you're still in the 90s.

I'm guessing from his location that maybe they do it in OZ? Nowhere in the states that I know of JC, I think we'd be the first. ;)

There is a specific method detailed in the Australian standards on how the test is to be  performed, with very specific locations for the microphones relative to the muffler outlets, rpm's at which the test is to be performed (dependent on the make and model), etc..  Do a google search for Australian motorcycle noise standards.  I believe the maximum sound level under their test method is 94 dB.

Also remember how the dB scale works as its logarithmic not linear.

90dB is 10 times more power than 80dB.   Amplitude is approximately 3 times.

3dB is more than it sounds.     It really takes out the harsh crackle and deepens those pipes down some.  That in itself makes it less annoying and likely less to attract the attention.    Been 20 years since I was down under and no clue what the authorities are like.

Good luck!
