That kind of money here would buy you 10+ acres and 3,000+ sq ft with a minimum of 300-500' lakefront and likely a boat dock and a large steel out-building.  Graveyard quiet nights, beautiful views of the stars and sunrises/sunsets on the water, a clear calm lake to fish in year-round and have fun in all summer.  Crystal clear well water (no water shortages!), deer to feed and watch or feed and hunt from your porch if that's your thing.  Friendly people and quiet neighbors that aren't right next door.  LOW crime rates, and pretty much everyone's got a gun in every room of their house!
Don't get me wrong, I think SF's one of the most beautiful cities in the country and I've been there several times over the years, but that life's not for this country boy!

My sister in Ohio cannot believe what houses in my neighborhood go for. She says that's what the Bengals and Reds players pay for their houses.

Ah, come on, slap a coat of paint on it and put in a little landscaping...you'll be able to flip that little fixer upper and sell it for $450k.

That's true only if you believe all the "reality" shows on TV about those house flipping couples.. IMHO those shows aren't based on any reality I'm aware of.

California is a great place to visit but I know I'd never be able or willing to pay the costs of living there.

I have family from Illinois and Wisconsin who many years ago relocated (and then their families expanded) to San Jose, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Berkley...  Every time they return home to visit they shake their heads costs at our low cost of housing and their high cost of housing and talk of moving back...

But then winter happens...   ::)
