missing o-ring behind cam plate
« on: September 30, 2015, 10:31:51 PM »

I started tearing down my motor to do the 113 build and I removed the cams first, so I could check crank runout. Found crank scored enough to where I could feel it with my finger nail. Not very happy, checked crank runout and it's at .005 not horrible as max spec is .012. Looked into cylinders with a boreal cope and found lots of scoring in front cylinder. Looks like piston skirt was rubbing. I bought this bike 1.5 months ago and put on 1000 miles the bike had a total of 27k. I couldn't believe all the damage inside. I remember when buying the bike the put new chain tensioners in. While looking things over in disbelieve I noticed an o-ring missing. My work area is clean and neat and I had an oil catch pan underneath, I looked everywhere to see if the o-ring fell out but nothing. I think dealer possibly left it out. What would leaving this o-ring cause

The run out on the crank is very normal in fact that is less than most . I would say that most we see new and other wise are in the 6-7 range.

As for the o ring ,  that is the feed so without it my best guess would be very low oil pressure , oil light not going out for a long period of time on start up..  never had a bike with one not in to see what would happen..

Post a picture of the back side of the plate with a close up of that area.. Maybe it will show up as a mark on the plate..

Gmr, there is a mark as it is the original cam plate to the bike. I bought this bike used with 26,200 miles on it. When they took it in on trade they installed a battery and new cam chain tensioners. Then I came along and purchased it. I am assuming that when they did the tensioners there guy didn't reinstall the new seal or whatever. Now 1000 miles later here I am.

Sorry about the bad pic of the front cylinder. That was the worst of all the scoring. There were many other spots in the front and rear cylinders

The spot where the O ring is missing is the oil pickup from the oil pan, delivering oil to the feed side of the pump. Without the O ring it could draw air and cause cavitation in the pump. Air being introduced into the pressure side would cause foaming, hotspots, maybe even air pockets to be trapped in the system. That is not good for any part of the motor, especially hard on crank main bearings and oil pump surfaces.
I would say the damage to the shaft is likely caused by improperly flushing the system, resulting in dirt of some form, likely particles from the shoes, to chew it up. Damage appears to be all on one side of the shaft, are you sure its only .005 runout?
It the oil pump/ plate badly scored?  Buffalo

Well if the o ring was missing you are lucky..  Crank is normal for runnout the cylinder walls not un common at all.. you are see marks , but a bore scope can make things look worse than it is...  You have a stock 110 ..  ;)

Wow that is good to know. I was very concerned with the scoring of the crank. The harley dealer I bought it from came and picked up my bike and had 2 of there techs look at it and said it's normal even the scoring on the crank. So for now I will continue with the 113 build and monitor the crank

IF the crank is something that you are worried about. Install a S&S direct out of the box. Very nice item and no need to worry any more. Or run the stocker and ride the wheels off it

I know another guy that said that too  :2vrolijk_21:
In its life it may have got hot and scored the cylinder, no way of knowing the real severity unless the parts are inspected and I would not take a good running motor apart to do that at this point.

After a great conversation yesterday with Don I am going to keep the lower end the way it is other than go to a 113. Save my sheckles and do a nice 124 build with Don at HD street performance in a couple years. Thanks for everyone's input
