Engine just shut off, 2015 SERGU
« on: October 03, 2015, 08:57:44 AM »

Ok, last week on my way to Bike Blues and BBQ.  I was leading on the interstate, with the cruise set at 77mph, or 3000rpm.  Then the bike just dies, motor shut off and damn near got ran over by my buddy behind me and wife wife behind us.  Cycled the ignition off and on and bike started right back up.

My buddy had this happen to him on his 2015 SERGU, only he was at a light and it just died.

Has anybody else's 2015 CVO just shut off?

Rather scary to have the bike die in traffic on the interstate like that.

Dave,
I've never had that happen, but now I'll be thinking about it.  I hope it's a VERY isolated instance for you and all of us.  I wonder what the heck could have caused it?  I'm thinking it almost had to be electrical, as you gotta have spark, gas, and air to keep her running.  If you find out what happened, please let us all know.  That is very disconcerting, even if she did fire right back up when you tried again.
Mine did die suddenly on me once, but I had accidentally hit the kill switch while at idle.  Scared the heck out of me.  I don't suppose you did that and then turned it back on at some point without knowing it prior to trying to restart?

Hopefully it set a code when it died, but unfortunately the Harley system sometimes doesn't even know if had a problem.

I wouldn't ignore it and hope it goes away all by itself.  This is a major safety issue, as you almost found out first hand.  Fortunately there wasn't a semi tailgating you when it happened, if you know what I mean.  I would definitely get it on record (on a work order and get a copy) at the dealer, even though the odds of the average Harley dealership service department doing anything other than blow it off with a "could not duplicate" comment are pretty long.

One culprit I would at least think about on a CAN-bus bike is the run/stop switch.  Both left and right switch assemblies have had issues and both have had engineering changes made.  While most reported issues seemed to be with the left side switch, I wouldn't rule out a right side problem.

I know its a reach but have them check that front plug wire where it rubs on the tank to see if it rubbed through yet. I would expect a miss before totally shutting down but its worth a look.

No code was set, not a surprise.  Dealer has the bike right now for some other warranty work and hail damage repair.  They have noted the shut off of the bike.

Will check the plug wires.  I doubt it as the bike runs great no miss, no hesitation.  Just died.

Dave,

My RGU was built in November, '13.  I had intermittent issues with the bike turning off before I could start it.  It did not seem to be a serious issue until, in March,' 14.  I was in the middle of the Stage 1 reprogram when it became a disaster.   See:  Re: 2015 RGU: I'm Blue... So Blue...  The on / off switch was defective.  A couple of weeks later, my volume control and voice activation buttons had intermittent failures and were replaced.  All has been fine since but it seems HD got a batch of bad switch gear.  Hope this is helpful.

Greg, Other side of handlebar but my clutch sensor has quit on my 2015 and dealer has ordered control parts for the left side.  Guess both sides have issues.  Has not been a big deal other than I have to remember to go to neutral before trying to start.  Not nearly as serious as a bike quiting unexpectedly.

fastfreddy, these are can bus controls.  Only four wires for all functions on each side of bars.  Seems if a wire gut damaged or chaffed when they installed the bars I would have found it a long time ago, bars were done with less then 10K on bike, I have 27 K on bike now.

Greg, I remember reading about your issues.  I will have them test the switch controls.  Good idea.

TNCarters, yes they have had issues with the switches on both side of the CVO handle bars.  I know one person who had three replaced, as two new ones came in bad.

I had my bike quit on me twice.  The first time i was coasting down an off ramp slowing down for a light.  The bike just died.  I checked the switch just to make sure that I did not turn off the bike by accident and I had not.  I turned off then on the rocker switch on the handlebar and then hit the starter switch and she started right up.  I reported it to my dealer but it was news to them.

The second time happened in a parking lot.  I was backing out of my space and pulled in the clutch.  The bike just died.  Released the clutch and then pulled it again, hit the switch and she started right up.  Later that day i was at the gas station and after filling up the bike would not start at all.  The bike was in gear, I pulled the clutch in and it would not start.  Put the bike in neutral and she started right up.

Reported it to my dealer and the replaced the Neutral Switch.  It was giving them a code that it was not working properly.  I hope that solves the problem.  Haven't had any issues since.

Winhawk,

That is interesting.  So far my bike has only done it that one time.  I have no codes.  If it does it again, I will have them check the neutral switch.  I did report it to my dealer right after it did it.

A friend had it happen one time on his 15 SERGU, he also reported it to the same dealer.  He has only had it happen once.  He has 30K on his bike and I am just under 29K.

Dave, what led my dealer to that conclusion was the fact that even though the bike was in gear and the clutch was engaged the bike would not start. Also when it died in the parking lot I started it in neutral and backed out. Only had left hand on bars as I was putting down face shield with right hand and engaged clutch and bike died. So there was no possible way for me to have accidentally turned the bike off.
