124 questions
« on: October 07, 2015, 11:45:43 AM »

Since there is a few weeks lead time on the S&S 124 engines, can you have them modify them prior to shipping? Something simple like bump the LC up to around 10.5 with black jugs instead of granite? With the lead time, it makes me think they assemble them as they are ordered.

Would it be any cheaper to just build my 113 into a 124?  I like to tinker and last year, when I installed the 113, I split the cases and installed an S&S crank. I know I would have to send my cases to Wide Open Cycles to relieve them for bigger jugs.  How hard is it install a Timken set up and do the bearings?

Question for Steve at GMR: Will the heads you built for my 113, last year, be good for a higher compression 124?

There is nothing wrong with my 113, just looking for something to get more power to the back tire. With the current set-up, it was 122/126 uncorrected, at sea level.  114/118 SAE.

Thoughts?

I would think a direct call to S&S Cycle would answer all your questions about buying a modified 124 directly from them.
Your 113 would need a new crank, again, to go from 4 3/8" stroke to 4 5/8" stroke. Cases would need to be bored for the 4 1/8" bore cylinders, again.
Why not sell the 113as is, buy a new T124, I'd chose the HC version if I was looking for a good jump in HP.
Despite people claiming the 640 cams need to rev up to make power, they are very on the drivetrain, and with a suitable exhaust and throttle body can usually pull 140hp+. The LC seem to be around 130hp.
My 8 year old T124 crate motor has 70K on it now, no problems, seems to be every bit as fast as it ever was, will run on 87 octane gas when its all that's available, gives good gas mileage. It still uses almost no oil, maybe 1/2 pint in 5K.  Mines carbed with an old style Propipe, still delivered 126.5hp/134t in my 01 Dyna. fwiw  twinotter

Special order worksheet needs to be completed in order for them to deviate from their packages.

Chris

One thing I do wonder about with the mufflers you have.. I ran a set on  a 107 and they worked fine however that same ex did not do well on the bike when it went to a 113.  I have not used the 555 am myself but did do a 113 with the 777 cam and the Jackpot ex. In the end the mufflers flat out did not work  ( with the 113 kit) , created two large dips in the power curve. Swapped them out for a set of crushers and the power came right into line. What I found was that the baffle in the pipe was really only louvered for half the length of the muffler??  :nixweiss:

Even then I felt that a cam swap would have netted better power.  I would have to look the sheet up. but it then made a nice smooth power curve.

Not sure what muffler you have but I feel that you have one or two things in that kit that are not playing well with each other....

We have done just over 47 of the 113 kits this year.. and have used mainly our 577 or the 600 cam however a few did have other cams and all made more than what you have.

We have done 29 in house 113 builds so I can directly tell you what i have seen with our cams and others as well

Give me a call at the shop be happy to go over a few ideas . The 113 kit is plenty powerful with the right parts all working together.

'Could always go 117" (4.125 Cylinders) with just a case bore. Use the S&S 4-3/8 Crank you have in the 113...

If you're wanting a Timken, I'd select a shop that line bores the cases (not expensive) and properly fits the Timken, it's another "may as well when we're in there" deal...

But then you might "tire" of the 117 after a while... so;
As others have posted, go with the 124HC and sell the 113...  :pepper:

I just got my 124 a few months ago and I had them powder coat the cases which kept the warranty in place but since it wasn't just a stock crate motor it was considered a "custom build" by them. They did also have the option to custom build the internal parts as you want. It ended up taking an additional couple of weeks.
