Please Don't Be This Guy!

I sure hope this was not a CVO!     :nervous:    :nervous:     Video of Motorcycle erupting in fire at gas station.  Rider leaves motor running and stereo blaring while fueling.  I'd call it Darwinian Natural Selection.

Man seriously burned in Marietta gas station fire.

The problem is the EPA compliant pump nozzle. If the motor would have been shut off it is still hot as hell and could still ignite the Fuel which has a vey low flash point. Never the less he was still partially at fault for not shutting down his bike. I think maybe he should have not been in such a hurry and paid more attention to what he was doing. He is still alive because of the actions of others and should be very thankful. He is a very lucky man. The Bike on the other hand is a total loss. Doesn't look like a CVO but he had a lot of money in that bike!!!

What the Dawg said...

.....plus, they showed the EPA nozzle at the end of the news story.  Yes, those things are a pain.  Actually, I haven't seen the evap. containment sleeve for quite a while now.  Most stations (around the SE anyway) have switched to the vented nozzle ends to avoid all the issues the containment sleeve caused.

I'm proud of the man that ran into the firestorm to help save the guy.....wonder if the guy is/was a fireman at some point in his life.  It wouldn't surprise me one bit.....fire fighters think of others first before themselves.

WOW!     where is common sense?       2 weeks ago...      some guy in centerline Mi     tried to BURN a spider with his lighter

while pumping fuel.  The spider was on the gas nozzle , while already in his car's  gas tank.

Fueling can be dangerous.  I see riders sitting on their bikes while refueling.  Foolish at the least.  If it overflows, gas will run down on your tender viddles.  Add a spark and its not going to be a good day.   I have ward fans that will run after it turn off the ignition.   I am glad they put an over ride switch on them.  Gas hitting the cylinder heads will vaporize the fuel and the Sparks in the fan can cause a big BOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!

Greg, I could not get the vid to play on the iPad,  I will only wait so long.  Was he sitting on the bike when it went pooooofffff?   Great post. We all need to think and stay ahead of the curve.

Appears he was standing with his back to the bike as if he was looking at the pump.  I never look at the pump, always watch the tank.  Hope he will make it.

I nearly *always* fuel the bike while sitting on it. Two THREE important bits:
1.) I *always* watch the fuel flowing into the tank directly...holding the vapor boot (if fitted) out of the way and
2.) I NEVER rely on the auto-shut off.
3.) I NEVER EVER fuel while running.

Ditto - these tanks are so hard to fill anyway, I fill sitting on the bike, stand down, but bike upright.  I *never* take my eyes off the fuel going into the tank.  I'm very pleased to say we don't have these vapour boots over here in Europe, so they are not an issue. (I've previously had a heck of a job with the differing nozzles in the US - can't understand why they don't adopt the same standard ones the rest of the world uses).

I carry a small led pocket flashlight held with my mouth, I use it to shine in the tank while filling so I can see how full it is getting.
I don't sit on the bike, but stand next to it so if anything happens I can get away fast.  I value my tender viddles too much to ever sit on the bike.  It's an old trick taught to me by a motor officer, who would fuel at least once a day for over twenty years.  He has seen it all.

Toward the end of the video, it showed the bike briefly pre ignition.  Looked like a 2010 CVO SG Tequila Red or Rum Maroon with a chopped Tour Pak.  Hope it wasn't a CVOHarley member.

Hope the man will be okay, and thanks to the guys who helped.

I typically fill my bike while on it to hold it straight up. I started this when I filled it at the beginning and then had gas coming out after I got going down the highway. I realized with it leaning away from the opening for the fuel nozzle it fills up past the point of over flowing if you straighten it back up. Anyway. that damned video just changed many years of staying on the bike while filling up. I will just start figuring out how much to fill it so it doesn't overflow when straighten back up. Screw that business right there! I have wondered what would happen if I spilled some down around the hot engine. No more for me. I am standing beside that bomb from here on out.

They used that same stripe on the saddle bags in 2004 and 2005 on the FLHTCSE Bikes. That tour pak looked like the really small aftermarket ones. Not a chopped HD tour pak. I just went back and looked at the video again. This bike had a lot of custom work done to it. Extended bags, full rear fender with no filler area and a custom front wheel. Didn't look at it close enough but it may have been a burnt (no pun intended) orange or a copper color on the bike. Who ever and what ever I hope they make a complete recovery.
