2010 CVO Street Glide - hard rear brake pedal (FLHXSE)
« on: October 11, 2015, 02:07:20 PM »

Got on the bike last week to run an errand and the rear brake pedal would barely move.  Pumped a few times and then stomped it, and it loosen up a bit.  Came home and removed the caliper and cleaned up the pistons.  They were pretty dirty with normal brake dust, road grime and the adhesive on the back of the pads was flaking off.  That didn't fix it.

Then I ran 12 oz of fresh brake fluid through the system.  The pedal is still hard after the bike has set for awhile.  Then loosens up a little giving some travel.  The anti-lock is pulsing when I try an emergency stop.

Talked to the local dealer and service writer said they have had 2 bikes come in recently where they found no leaks, but air in the system.  I hope that's all this is.

The bike has 38K+, second set of brake pads.  Have you had a similar situation?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

When I feel a spongy pedal, I automatically think "air in the system."  So, with a rock hard pedal, it must be too little air in the system, right?   :D

OK, just kidding.  So, brake pads were good, pistons move when you press the pedal?  Could be bad master or slave cylinder.

I think I'm going to have to let the dealer take a look.  Cleaned up caliper, pistons moving good and new fluid in the system.  The only thing I didn't do is sand the pads and rotor, cuz I didn't think of glazing at the time when I took the caliper off.  But even so, I don't understand this rock hard petal (particularly at the beginning).
